The biggest issue I see is flushing the evaporator completely. I use Ester oil as recommended by several sources for a R-12 to R-134 conversion.

Wally - Doing my flush and fill this weekend on my late 93 GTS with Factory 134A system.
Flushing all the lines and components as best as possible.
All new components. No oil on the compressor.
So 12 oz of PAG is the way to go on the 134a system?
Thanks for your input.
Roger

Rog--

There's no specific advantage to PAG over POE, but POE is somewhat less hygroscopic. In a new clean dry system, no difference. In a system that hasn't been dried, POE may have the edge. Either one, work from sealed bottles, same rules you use with brake fluid. It's OK to buy a big bottle for multiple cars, OK to store, just make sure the cap is tight and and you don't leave it open any more than necessary.

I don't remember seeing a specific recommendation for PAG or POE in the WSM section for the later GTS with R-134a. Most new cars here came with PAG from the factory. Maybe Porsche followed the industry standard.

For those playing along at home, POE is the best candidate for universal replacement IMHO. If there was -ever- mineral oil in a system, POE will get along with the remains and not turn to jelly. It's compaitible with both R-12 and R-134a, in that it is actually carried through the system correctly by the refrigerant flow. PAG and mineral oil make jelly that doesn't flow and doesn't lubricate, hence the preference for POE.

Dr Bob,
POE it is - not worth taking a chance and ending up with enough Jelly to make a triffle 8>) English joke!
Thanks,
Roger

Your car never had mineral oil in it so no compatibility issues. It probably came with PAG.
