I would not drive the car with that many miles and years on the timing belt. You would be better off shipping it cross country and having all maint and replacement issues performed before driving the car for any extended distance.
TB is significant as are the fuel lines and thrust bearing pressure release on any 87-95 automatic.

Whoever does the PPI should be able to give you a good answer as to what it needs now, what can wait, and if a cross country drive is a good idea. Going by information from the previous owner is just rolling dice.

Smyth1 - add your car info (year, tranny, etc) to your sig if you want meaningful advice. The timing belt question, for example, may vary dramitically by year.

If it's not showing any bad signs, I'd say a after a quick inspection/tension check, it should be fine. The main thing is to drive it gently until you get home, then change it out. I firmly believe the worst thing you can do is do major work just before you drive across the country.

Where's the car now? If it's close to one of the better shops, have them do the work on the PPI list before you fly out to get the car. Including the belt. That way you get a bonding experience and actually get to sleep on the way home instead of worrying.

Needs to be done anyways so do it now before driving cross country. If anything else major on the PPI showed up like a leaking steering rack I would also get that done now.
If the A/C isn't working you might also add that the list, these cars are awful to drive on a really hot humid day with non functional A/C (or maybe I'm getting spoiled). Definitely takes the fun out of driving these cars.

We only split the crank cradle and still had the engine on the stand 6 (or was it 5) days before leaving for SITM.
He did get more of a test drive this year than I did last year, maybe 30 miles or so.
