Timing lights
I use a Snap-On, but I would think just about any one would work.
You should be able to buy a used old style Snap-On for very little or just buy a really cheap used one.

I have a vintage Sun timing light that's served me well for a few decades.
Except for the stuff like digital edvance and stuff, xenon flash-tube timing light technologies haven't changed much in the intervening years. Digital advance allows you to set the timing to something different from where there's a mark on the balancer. It will also cause you to chase your tail if the setting is accidentally moved when you expect it to be off. I guess if there was virtually no difference in cost I might get one with, otherwise without is fine. With that in mind, almost any of the units sold at the bulk parts places will get the job done for you. Look for a durable clamp-on sensor lead, a BRIGHT flash so you can use it during daylight hours, and a durable case. Avoid dropping it of course, keeping in mind that there's a glass-envelope flash-bulb inside, and a drop will break the tube unless it's a lucky small fall.
