Not really cosmetic, but it is a difference.
With the right pads the S4 brakes are really good.
The brakes on my 87 S4 are way ahead of the brakes on my 87 Corvette, which are known to be good.

I bet the ones on a GTS are just wonderful.

If my 1986 928S was an April delivery car, what are the odds it was one of those blessed with S4 brakes?

to find out if you have the big S4 brakes just look at the last 4 numbers of your VIN if they are over 1000 or higher, then you should have the big brakes

it would take a just a look to find out, are they a single piston sliding caliper or a four piston fixed caliper.

Look at the picture on the WSM on 47-03, if they look like that they are S4 brakes.

Dskippy, Landseer is right - if possible under singapore regs, importing a RHD japanese GTS will be cheaper and give you a more saleable outcome.

If your '86 is RHD, then the odds are 100%, as all '86's have S4 brakes outside the north american market.

Only the early US cars got the crappy old stock brakes

(waits for "S brakes aren't crappy" comments)

S brakes are crappy ... couldn't see an 'oh my god I'm approaching a corner at high speed and I'm out of brakes' icon.

LOL it is an LHD. I had to have the calipers and rotors replaced at one point because turned out my mechanic was doing a negligent job and completely ruined them. I just hope the shop ordered the correct parts! Shall check when I get back to North America. In rainy London at the moment.

Mine seem great except on the car that didn't get a new caliper seal kit in the front.

I guess I'm just not driving these S cars fast enough. I'll work on that.

I put GTS front brakes on my S4 car. It was mostly for bling factor because I sure didn't fade out the stock brakes.
