Also, to add to the speed discussion - you guys are making the mistake of only considering the BMWs peak numbers. The 540 has a better curve than its peak numbers would suggest, very good area under the curve.
And just so you guys don't think I'm a BMW fanboy, I'm more Stuttgart than Munich, even including MB...and he doesn't get nearly as many comments I do with my 1985 MB S-Class that I modified to the point that it is slightly faster than his car, despite my 2.47 rear end and 4 speed slushbox.
BTW OP, where in N. NJ? My brother just moved to Morristown, maybe I can talk him into giving you a test run lol.

I think the 540 is a sweet car. With a 5spd it is REALLY sweet. I was refering to racing before, but my opinion of the car is nothing short of two big thumbs up.
Almost pulled the trigger on one a few years ago. It to was a 5spd.
For what I was going to pay for it , my 928 will run circles around a stock one by the time I have that much money in my car. The beauty of modding!

When you say 5 speed, do you mean the stick, which was a 6speed, or the auto, which was in fact a 5 speed? I ask because I'm wondering if I've finally come across the one person in the universe other than myself who thinks a 5 series is better with an auto than a manual.

You trying to get MK into this?

Greg Thats funny! Mark knows a lot more about 928's than I do for sure, a lot more!G earing in a car in a 1/4 mile makes a big difference. I had a Mark VIII 32v 4.6L w/ intake and exhaust. When I added 4.10's I dropped a full sec in the 1/4 mile! Best mod to do on that car except for N20 of course.
marlinspike Only a clutch for this guy! My bad on the number of gears!

Your car is from 1979 his is from 1997. I'd just tell him "no **** your car's faster", my car was born at the absolute height of the emissions restrictive, high gas price pumping, low horsepower making era. The fact that the 928 can even hold its own is testament to its how great a car it was and still is. Furthermore, the fact that a Euro 928 of the same vintage would be just as fast as the BMW tells me his car isn't all that impressive. And one last one, if you cared whether you had a car that could out drag his 97 BMW then you'd simply go out and BUY a car that could... there are a whole slew of them. Your 911 C2 would have taken him to the cleaners. Plus you 928 is a classic and his is... well... a family sedan.

The race you will win is the depreciation race......that big BMW will be worthless in 5 years. There is no resale market for big old high line BMW and Mercedes cars....the repair costs for the highly electronic complicated cars just kills them literally. And not being a sports car few people will ever try to restore one.

Assuming it is an extremely early e39 540 (which I guess it is, since you owned an e39 and know what they look like), that 0-60 is BMW's understatement. Magazines that tested them got anywhere from 5.9 for the auto to 5.4 for the 6-speed, the 6 speed having 3.10 gears versus the auto's 2.82. 1/4 mile on the auto was 14.3, I can't remember what they got on the stick.
I've got to say, I don't get the e39 appearance comments. To me it looks very distrinctive. The front end has a bit of a tiger look to it, and the back end is classic German. I agree that the vast majority of modern cars either look bland or bad, but I don't think this is one of those.

I don't think anyone is calling an E39 ugly. It's a nice looking car, but hardly "timeless". No one ever took a double take to my 540 sport, ever. I get a thumbs up or a double take every time I'm in my 928. My 840 was fairly invisible too. Let alone my wife had a 328 at the time and her friend thought it was cute that we drove the same model BMW. WOW.

Whoa whoa whoa...an 8 series that was invisible? What the heck?????? That's borderline blasphemous.
Haha, figured I'd pay for that one. Maybe I just see it because that's what the designers said they were going for in the video that came with the car, but to me it's very apparent.
