I just tell you one thing. The other day we went to a track day and two identical cars with different tires (street) were night and day. One was an understeer monster, whose tires lasted 50 laps, the other one was pretty tail-happy, much faster, and its tires were destroyed after 5 laps. Pressures were similar, probably not ok, but nothing obviously wrong there.

The cost of the tires and mods could be similar to the cost of the car. Handling depend a lot in the specific car, mods and tires and you can fine tune it to your like, mostly with the manometer. 928s have a pretty durable engine (with street tires), good brakes and it sounds good. 951 has better acceleration out of slow corners and it's a bit cheaper to race (uses less tires and brakes).

So, use whatever you prefer, and play a bit with pressures and brands of tires, till you get what you like. Then service/upgrade what you think it could be better. You can't get it wrong.

Hi,

Technically speaking, the drive train of a 928 is really better than the one of a 944. A professionnal driver on a race track with a 944 may experience the limit of the mc pherson as in very hard condition it reverse the effect of anti rolling! The rear axle experienced different type of problem, as it is to control over steer when you enter the curve with a little pessure on the brakes. The 928 has not that problem due to weissach rear axle. The 928 front axle is made from 2 A arm one above the over, as it is one a system really close to what is done on race car.
But 928 is a street car and some compromise has been done by the factory. The toughness of the spring is much too low and the anti roll bar is dimensionless in order to make the car comfortable. In the same way, A-arm are mounted on rubber which affect in a positive way noise but in negative control of the movement of the car. So when all that stuff has 100 000 or more miles on them, efficiency of the system is lower and the car should experienced lesser handling as it is supposed to do.

I own both cars, and love both. As everyone else has said, they are two different cars. I haven't tracked either of them yet, as I am still sorting out both of them. You can feel the acceleration of the 951 more when the boost hits, so it is exhilarating in a different way than the steady smooth power of the 928, but as stated earlier, the speed is deceiving in the 928. Maintenance costs seem to be similar, but I've only had the 928 a couple of months and the 951 going on 2 years. I am able to work on both without too much difficulty (I get by with a little help from my Rennlist friends! ). I say drive both and decide which will provide a base for your planned use. Both are great vehicles!!! Good luck.

At speed on the highway the 944 Turbo feels like a prop driven plane, the 928 feels like a jet.
