My 82 LOVES Royal Purple 10W40!!
I've never been inclined to try out RP over the last fifteen years I've been aware of it. Not sure why really.....never heard anything bad about it.
But I recently learned that these old engines need old school oils that are seemingly becoming rare these days, meaning ZDDP content.
Apparently RP is heavily fortified with ZDDP, so I thought I'd try it out.
The car responded instantly to the new oil. I had Amsoil XL 10W30 with Auto Rx in there before, and the car ran nicely, but I really didn't think the bottom shelf Amsoil XL oil was protecting the top end like it needed.
So, RP it is. Engine fires up easy, revs quick, sounds great, and even seems to be more powerful.

I can't say that extra Zinc could be felt, but I know it needs to be in there.

10-40 is a tad light for 928's....most run 20-50 or 15-50....however for street driven 928's 10-40 will be fine.... Most "racing" oil like Amsoil-redline-royal purple are not "street" rated which means they don't have to follow DOT guidelines for zinc content..which is GREAT for us....
In theory thinner oil will yield MORE HP....since its easier to pump through the engine..BUT at the expense of protection when you really need it...but street driven 928's are VERY reliable....its not until high rpm running on track that the oiling design flaws become dangerous to the motor

NOT GOOD...however there were other reasons why that motor died....being 3+ qts down due to severe leaks comes to mind....that plus 6500rpm shift points since the bowden cable was too tight doesn't help either
I do consider myself an expert in blowing up 928 engines....since I have personally blown up 3 myself!!!

Still, you probably know their weaknesses better than anyone else. *thumbs-up*

You couldn't resist taking swig out that red line bottle, right? ;-) But I have to agree with you, Amsoil gives me a hell of a hangover!
