Going to redye seats...which product to use?

I got a set of very nice front seats for my 84' that I am going to do a redye job on. I seeking input from those who have experience with this task. The new seats are Burgendy in color and I will be dyeing them Gray Beige. I have searched and found that some folks prefer Leatherique and some prefer other suppliers. Looking for input from those who have done this before.

Do a full-forum search on the subject, Jim, as this is a subject that crosses to other Porsche cars.
I just did a set. Cleaned some light grey S4 seats with clorox cleanup, then water, then mineral spirits, then SEM solvent cleaner that evaporates very fast, then applied SEM black leather & plastic "paint".
They look great. Not sure of longevity. A bit hard to coat between seat centers and bolsters. I used weights to hold the seams open.
I practiced first on a torn light tan seat. Paint seemed to dry fast and stick well, using a scratch-with-fingenail test. Definitely adhered better on a section where I used the SEM solvent cleaner first.
Leatherique apparently has a much more lengthy prep requirement ( removing all color first ). I couldn't find the products locally and didn't want to invest the time. Might ultimately be a bad call, depending on how the SEM seats wear. For now, I consider the SEM a temporary measure on a daily driver that will never achieve any resale value. Seats are just being installed now.
Not sure what others think.

I went full circle on mine using SEM... three years later it looks like ****.

looked great for about 6 months and decent for a year. The stuff used to fill cracks (kind of like thick elmers glue) didn't last either.

I've heard good things and my rep 89 miles away would redye my interior cheaper than buying the stuff yourself. But it is just a temporay fix.

Hi G Man, It is much harder going from a dark color such as Burgundy to a lighter color Grey/Beige when dyeing. You have to remove as much dark pigment as possible. I would contact Leatherique and ask their recommendation. It might save you a lot of needless work in the long run. I love the rich Burgundy color and bought like new Grey Leather Boxster seats to put in my 944. I have Can Can Red seats now and will most likely buy a light colored set of rear seats to dye. I work with leather so will be going with Leatherique as they are the best bet for long lasting results. You get rewarded out what you put into the prep work. I only like to do it right the first time and not have to go back and do it all over again.

This topic has been well explored. Look at this thread in particular for what appears to be a very novel but effective solution: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ng-wheels.html

leatherique worked perfect for me in a DD with no problems. Full work up with the etch, cleaner, then dye per instructions. They also stock standard porsche colors which is great too.

I've used leatherique and ColorPlus. Had much better success with longevity and appearance with the ColorPlus products. The current seats in the GTS have been in for 4 years now, and they still look like new. I've posted the process I used to get these 12 way power heated seats brought "back" before. They had been in a wrecked S4 with windows part way open and in the rain etc. for a year and a half. Had mold and mildew about an eighth inch thick in many places. Took about 2 weeks of spare time, but when finished, they looked like new, and still do!

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I spoke with leatherique yesterday and told them what I wanted to do. They said it would not be a problem going from burgendy to gray beige. These seats are almost perfect in condition. The passanger seat needs some conditioning to get the leather softened up but aside from that they are great. Plus they are an upgrade to the 8-way adjustment. At this time I am planning on going with Leatherique. I know prep work is the key to a good result so I will be taking my time doing this. Will post before and after pics and progress pics.
