Need duplicate of sole master key 1978
OK guys, I know this question has been addressed before. The search function doesn't seem to bring it up, so I'm sorry in advance for the redundancy of this post.
What are the options for getting a duplicate key made? I have only ONE key, which works all the locks. I am a bit paranoid about giving it up for a template. I remember rennlisters saying something like "oh just send out the key but insure it for the cost of having all new locks installed" etc. That sounds fine on paper, but I seriously doubt that there is a capable locksmith within 500+ miles of here. Even getting my car aligned using the local talent was next to impossible, and it's still not right. But that's another story.
Car is 1978, originally a Canadian import.
Thanks!

Yep, take a good hi-res photo of each side of the key, and e-mail it to those guys above.
Search here will reveal many happy customers.
Even if you don't buy a key now, at least having photos of it means if you do lose your only key, you can get them to make another.
They also have the correct steel Huf blanks for using a Porsche key head, as well as the Porsche red key.

Cool, good to know, I have a few classics that it would be nice to have spares handy. Question, so you send them a picture in high res and they cut it for you? Or they just send you the matching blank so a local locksmith cuts it for you?

They cut it for you. Works better than my original.

This reminds me - I should order a Huf key for my '87 since I re-keyed its locks to all be the same. The only keys I have are two non-Porsche Silca ones, and the keyring just doesn't look like it belongs in a Porsche

Worked great for me. Keys arrived faster than I hoped for and work great.
Only thing is that the little Porsche crests fell off the keys a year or so later

You can order them - I did, and got a silver one which I glued onto the key head where the old one was.
I'll dig up the part number.. will edit in a min.
944 538 443 00 - Key Head - Porsche Crest Sliver 86-95
I found the part number, and ordered mine from 928 Specialists.

I have a red replacement key and would like the newer style Porsche crest lighted head. Anyone know if I can get a new key cut for my 79 with the newer style head?

As long as the key you have has all the "stuff", you buy the lighted head as in the post above and the Huff blank from the 928 key place you choose.
*** Half a dozen places in the world cut 928 keys. Makes me wonder about the people on ebay that sell the blank keys, chances of some local shop being able to cut a working key are almost zero.

Call local locksmith shops (the ones that sell safes, etc). Dont bother going to the shopping mall key cut places, Home Depot, etc. None of them will cut steel keys. One mall place said hed do it if I gave him a $300 deposit
A local locksmith cut two for like $10. He had the right tool blade for steel keys. Worked perfectly.
The only thing special about Porsche keys is that they are steel. Thats it.
