Hi.
Found a stock rear muffler on a local tradingplace.
I'm considering a RMB and thought maybe it's possible to open up the stock muffler and remove/alternate the inside to get a more V8 sound from the pipes....

What do you think ?

Thanks, Paul

MY 89 - have an X-pipe, no cats and a gutted stock rear muffler. Sound is moderate - not too loud around town but louder at higher RPM's. I like the sound.

I am planning to get another cat-back for my '84. I installed a Y pipe cause the CAT had rusted and was leaking. no exhaust system leaks now, but my exhaust sounds like the stock muffler is an empty garbage can. I am guessing the internal baffles have rusted.

good luck

You should check the German message board pff.de - this is the only way you can have a RMB in Germany with low risk of getting caught by the TÜV.

In the late 80ies I knew a guy who always had two rear mufflers for his 928s - one stock muffler, and one that supposedly had nothing but straight pipes inside...

A friend in Austria converted his exhaust and did not like it. Sound was simply not as good as the RMB. It has got something to do with the resonances within the "original muffler housing" - don't know a better way to describe it. RMB is the one and only.
Best thing would be (IMO) : X-pipe and small or no Cats, GT middle resonators and a valve system in the rear exhaust that can be opened up and closed with a switch - just like in the 986/7 and 996/997
