Product Review: Dr Color Chip

My problem is matching the paint, I have the factory silver paint for my 88 and it is too dark. I need to get the color scanned. The paint could have faded over the years.

This product sounds like a great idea to hold off on a re spray! I am currently eyeing this one 928 that needs a re spray, but if I do get her I can now take care of its looks and enjoy her on the road as i save cash for the re spray... Thanks for the post!

I have used DrColorchip a few times. And it worked really great! Best results on solid non-metallic paints. I just lept applying coat after coat until the chips filled in. Small ones can be made smooth and almost undetectable with lots of patience. Large carter size chips not as good but definitely will visually blend into the paint and as Andrew states, a 15ft paint job becomes a 3ft paint job. Well worth cost.

I've been using it for quite a few years with good results as well. Echo that it does work better on darker colors, regardless of metallic or not. I've found that the repair on lighter paints is darker, regardless of the age of the paint.
A fairly recent change to their offerings: if you buy the kit (particularly the larger bottle kit) and you want to get some for another car, you can just buy the paint w/o having to get another whole kit (via the "shop products" page). The removal solution lasts quite a long time.

Doesn't really sound any different from the Langka, except Langka is a LOT cheaper and I don't think they sell the touchup paint, you need to buy that from a dealer etc.
Langka does fill in the whole chip, but its just layers applied a few minutes apart.
My impression is that more surface prep, beyond cleaning, like roughing it up a bit with a glass fiber pen, increases durability.

Looks good, Andrew!
When you applied the special Dr. Colorchip solution, did you just put it on by hand with a cloth? With the Langka I've used, they provide a stiff plastic card that you use with a very thin cloth (I used a strip of an old bed sheet). The card provides a rigid flat surface to "plane" off the excess paint blob without gouging into the repair.
I suspect Dr. Colorchip will be similar to Langka when it comes to metallics - that is, they need to be built up with multiple thin layers as the metallic tends to settle into the chip. The deeper the chip and thicker the paint blob, the less metallic you'll see. Solid colors are no problem.
Either product appears to produce fantastic results for the money. I've done my hood and mirrors, still need to do the nose cap.

I've tried both Langka and Dr. Colorchip with mixed results.
Langka works perfectly with non-metallic colors. You can make chips disappear completely, if you have the patience to do so.
Langka never worked for me on metallic colors, as the metallic base cannot be touched or swiped in any way, and the clear coat is often not thick enough to prevent some touching of the base.
I bought Dr. Colorchip for my silver Saab, and it was too dark, Very visible. The touch-up paint seems to match, but once you wipe it as instructed, it turns darker. Not sure they can fix this.
I've been thinking of trying Dr. Colorchip on my 928, though, because it is darker. Haven't pulled the trigger on it, yet.
There is another product out there that's like a little "pen". Has anybody tried those?

We can put a man on the moon and soon on Mars but paint just keeps chipping right off when you hit it. I figure they should have figured that out by now with all the paint flaking off stuff in space and where is fusion, I want a cold fusion V8 with whatever they would call HP like CFHPG (cold fusion hyper power goodness).

Yes, has anyone tried the pen? Any more on Dr Chip and dark metallic success stories? I have some chips and a one inch+ long scratch I self imposed on my car by me on my motorcycle. Ouch, where is the self healing paint?

FWIW I have three Dr Color kits currently in hand - one Arena, one GPW, and one BMW Alpine white. So far all I've used is the BMW Alpine white on the boy's car - very happy with the results. I figured I'd try it on his car first
Thanks Andrew for the write up! Closely matches what I've observed as well.
