Default Trailer Wiring - Existing Support in Harness?

Did the factory provide electrical support for a trailer? Is there a connector somewhere that is supposed to be used in conjunction with the factory hitch. My car is a 1983 US model. If there is no factory support what did others do? Where is a good place to access the required signals?

For trailer wiring you need a converter box , a HIGH quality one . The 928 has seperate turn signals and brake lights , on the trailer, with the standard flat 4 conector, the turn signals and brake lights are the same bulb . The wiring can be spliced into at the back harness , and the converter box hidden in where the jack is stored . The wire harness can be stored behind the tool panel as well , it's all hidden . I have hitches and wiring on both on my 928's

Where did you get your hitch from or did you make your own?

928's are rated to tow 1500lbs without trailer brakes and 3500lbs with trailer brakes...so in theory if you had a really light trailer and racecar you could pull with a 928.....but would I...I dunno

rich , I made the one on my 81 it's a reciver style hitch ,so I can put a bike rack in or tow a trailer. On the GT I didn't know there was a hitch there until I saw an invoice in the service records . It's a reciver tube welded to a plate , bolted to the alum bumper , there is a hole in the cover under a hinged licence plate . It's totaly hidden . I would rate it for 500 - 600 # , just fine for a track trailer . I built one of those and would post a picture but I haven't learned to do that .

My understanding is that on the 84 and prior models there was no provision for a plug-in harness. The trailer harness has to be spliced into the rear light harness. From 85 on there is supposed to be a farness that includes some kind of plug interface so the harness should be plug and play. Both of these style harnesses from the factory where wired with separate brake and turn signal wires (7 round pin plug) and a converter was plugged into the receptacle at the hitch to convert to the 4 wire plug.

When I found my factory hitch on craigslist it was off an 84 so I have the harness that needs to be spliced in. I have searched, but as of yet have been unable to find a factory 85+ harness. I haven’t yet hooked up my lighting as I have had other project consuming my wrenching time, so I haven’t had a chance to figure out where the 85+harness would plug in. I figure once I figure out what connectors I need, I should be able to find someone parting a car that could get me the male and female connectors, so I could make a plug in splice for my lights and connect to the 84 harness I got with the hitch.

Default Looking to build my own harness

For my 1988 S4, I am in the process of fabricating a hitch to be used for a bike rack. I will need accessory lights on the rack since the bikes will obstruct the lights. So I want to be able to connect an electrical harness to the turn signals, brake lights, and driving lights. I am hoping there is a connector that I can tap into and I could use some help finding a good place. In reviewing the various factory documentation, it does appear there is a provision to connect a hitch harness into the main rear lighting harness according to the wiring diagrams. It looks like there are two connection possibilities, The most promising is the "SOCKET FOR TRAILER HITCH" The later looks to be what I am looking for but I cant tell if that is the add on harness that comes with the hitch (see PET part number is 928-612-905-01) or if that is in the car someplace. The second option is connector "T24" this is a flat 6 PIN connector (PET part number 171-971-998 E) with a documented location under/near the CE panel. Does anyone have any insight on the locations or pictures of these in situ?

In PET there is documentation of a factory harness (part number is 928-612-905-01) but it seems to be no longer available (NLA) There isnt' much information is given other than the part number and the note that it applies to model years 1985 and up. Does anyone have info on this part? Is this part the "KS 180" harness noted in the wiring diagram above or does this plug into the "SOCKET FOR TRAILER HITCH"

Lastly, if you have created your own harness, I would be interested to see how connected it into the factory wires.
