Yes... but not really...
Of course the circuits from the relay are different for the motor & lights.
What I said was its the same wire from the switch to the relay that initates both - the reason the lights don't come on until they are up is different - they are temporarily disabled at the relay as long as the motor is still running (so as not to blind anyone).

Hi guys,
I read through the thread here as I have a similar problem with my '79 928. However, not so simple a fix alas.
The lights are all fully working but the motor doesn't move when the lights are turned on. The relays seem to be good & I have all new german fuses in there.
When we bypassed the system at the relay, & another time at the connector close to the motor, the motor itself goes up & down but doesn't stop on it's own.
I got a second-hand motor off ebay & when I plugged that one in - nothing happened. I've switched out the replays for a friend's that we know has working light motor.
4 of us have spent hours pawing over the manual and messing with this and still not working.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Howard,

Howard - do the lights still work when they are down? they shouldn't... if they do it implies the motor isn't even trying to drive up => a feedback switch issue.
There are also 2 types of motors - they changed at the S4 introduction, connectors are different switch functions are quite different. Did you get the right replacement motor?
It is likely that your feedback switches (or diodes) in the motor aren't working. I'd dissassemble and verify.
Check the diodes conduct in one direction only with a DMM (diode test mode).
You can replace with 1A and >20V diodes from radio shack - solder in in the same orinetations...

Hi Alan,
Yes, the lights still work when in the down position.
I double checked the replacement part with 928 Int & Pelican & both say it's the 78-86 motor model, so should be good.
Guess I'll need to add it to the list of projects to pull one of them apart & check/replace the diodes.

VERIFY that lnk between the motor shaft and the arm on the headlight crossbar is attached at both ends. There is a washer, a bushing and the arm, another washer and an E-clip at each end, in that order. The clips sometimes fall ouit of somehow get removed, so the motor is no longer attached to the crossbar.
