Default oversize tensioner arm shoulder bolt?

I have an 86. Everything is apart for tb/wp/gears etc.

Question - has anyone drilled out the idler arm boss on the pump to 10 mm & made a custom shoulder bolt? I just keep looking at the original one with 8mm threads and comparing a 10mm bolt to it's lots of difference. Would be MUCH stronger.

Anything wrong with this? Thanks!

Sounds logical, but its still only supported by one end. You can convert to an MY87+ style that has a "cross support" at the "free end" or get the Porkensioner. Show pictures if you do what you suggest. Ed

I've done it as a matter of necessity on a friends car where the thread was damaged ... but ... you have to make sure that the thread is drilled and tapped true, so that the new stepped bolt seats and you're not putting stress on the shoulder when you tighten it up (other than a straight axial load from torquing it up). Much stronger and less likely to bend.

The suggestions already made probably make more sense though, easier and just as/more reliable.

This would be much easier and cheaper. The brace arm goes to the water pump and all the new ones are drilled and tapped for it.

Can you source a 10mm bolt with the right barrel diameter and length?
