Default Defroster vacuum pod actuator location.

Any one have a good picture as to EXACTLY where this is located. If i recall the dash and all has to come out?

..also..does it fail OPEN or closed? Saftey and German engineeering would say to me that it fails open to always provide defrosting.

No, the last I read about this someone was saying that you can reach that actuator with the pod removed. I believe it is towards the center under the dash close to the windshield. It fails open. My defrost actuator is actually not working, but I don't really care. Most of the time I have that vent open anyway to cool the dash. I just plugged the solenoid for that actuator.

You can get to it with the pod and gauges removed!

Not my pic - I think Rob uploaded them... great shots.

Pod off acess does look viable from this shot

Defrost defaults open (no vac) smart choice as is usual.

Not sure if it was just dumb luck, but I replaced the diaphragm for the defroster on my MY90 with the center console out and the driver side knee bolster removed. It took three hands and some KY to get the new diaphragm into the existing housing correctly so as to make it seal. If you make the attempt, be sure to test the results with the Mighty Vac before you button everything up.

I have replaced the defroster without removing anything...

I wouldn't recommend it though.

Mine is RHD so maybe not relevant, but recently when I was checking temp setting motor, I remember noting that I could access the defrost actuator with just the parcel shelf and console side removed on RHS. At least I could see it clearly, I don't know if I would have been able to swap the rubber diaphragm on it.

The configuration of the HVAC is really no different between LHD/RHD. So if you were really looking on the RHS then you were probably looking at the footwell vent actuator (see picture above). You would have an easier time accessing the defrost vent from the pass side on a RHD though (with parcel shelf removed).
