With proper care, IE coolant changes every other year, just age.
They will last 20 years if cared for and do not have any voltage issues.

Failure to change the anti-freeze every couple of years, or using anti-freeze that's not compatible with aluminum, running with low water level, causing overheating, not using distilled water, age.

The plastic side tanks and seals makes them leak as they wear out. Over time they also can build up sediment inside the small tubes reducing flow. Run or sit long enough without anticorrosion coolant and they can "rust" . Have a clip fall off the headlight motor arm and it punches a hole when you try to raise the headlights.

Besides Gregs suggestion the other failure point is the top of the right end tank.
There is an airpocket that cant be removed and since the hottest coolant is in this area the coolant cant keep the plastic covered and thus reduce the temps. this causes the tank flange to become brittle and over time the flange cracks and then it leaks from the top flange area.
When you get your tank replaced look at the old tank and you will see a white level line where the airpocket resides its about 1/4 in from the top of the inside of the tank

My 81 was purchased by my father in 1992, no record in it's extensive history of a radiator repair / replacement. I have yet to touch it.

So this means 1/2 to SITM it's going to fail.

Guss that NOS unit I bought off eBay is going into the hatch for the trip

My 84 still has the stock radiator. So long as you regularly change the coolant they will go a long way.

Missing circlip on headlight mechanism is another failure mode.

One White, One Black, One Blonde

Hippie personas fighting crime as an alternative to being incarcerated themselves. That is a way back machine thought.

i'm not driving a 928 anymore as many of you know. i now drive a very nice 968. i will be installing a supercharger soon.

we don't have but a few 968 guys on rennlist. soon, my car will be making almost as much heat as a 928.

i came here because there's a lot of bright, front engine P-car owners at the 928 page.

i have a chance to get a spare 968 radiator for a c note. your answers suggest i should go for it.

thanks.

I did that to mine. Really annoying. $40 to have it fixed.
