Default Spare engine identification?

I bought a 1979 928 last week and the deal included a spare engine. Engine serial number is M28/16 - 8106153.

I have done searches on rennlist and through google and all the references I find don't list this serial number within the engine number sequences for U.S. engines.

Does anyone have a more complete listing and can you help me determine what type of 4.5L I have.

Thanks
Jim

Thanks,

Just ran across anothe rsite and found that as well. So my 928 is a 5 spd. Don't think i need an engine at this point but are the manual and AT engines interchangable?

Thanks
Jim

As far as I know, they are interchangeable. You will need to swap the flywheel to a manual one, and also block off the manifold vacuum line which is meant to connect to the transmission.

What Hilton said ... It'll fit and can be adapted. There are probably a few other insignificant differences in detail between the two. US will also be a bit different to what's the case here ... e.g: smog. Others will know exact details.
