as Ken stated the 85 and 86 and 86.5 engines are the same, as are injections systems (BTW Ken makes chips for the 85,86, and 86.5 cars)
the 1987 is the start of the S4 designation that is the thinner intake where you can see the cam covers.
The 86.5 has the S4 underpinnings on the suspension, also the 3rd brake light on the hatch, and many of the interior upgrades, seats and doorpanels.
The early 86 has the smaller front brakes the S4 brakes are quite a bit bigger, hence a few owners will fit the S4 brakes to the fronts of an 85 or 86 car, the upper and lower control arms are different as well as the spindles.
The rear lower control arm attach points are directly to the chassis on the 85,86 cars where the 86.5 has relocated attach points to aluminum brackets.
The 85, 86 ,86.5 engines all make 288hp where the S4 from 1987 onwards makes 316

I have an 86.0 and do NOT have 86.5 envy. Since mine is a 5-speed, I'd much rather have that feature than the theoretical advantage of larger brakes and the newer style front end geometry. I think the exhaust is also different, which hasn't been mentioned - this is a bit of an advantage, if so. The main advantage of an 86.5 is the suspension parts were produced in greater quantity and so are more avail., potentially. In daily use the newer style anti-lock is the advantage you need - and the 86.0 apparently has this. The 100 or so pounds less the OB's tally even compensates somewhat for the smaller brakes. I think best to buy condition in older cars rather than year. A five speed is nice in a 928 as long as the master cylinder has been done by someone else.

Early 86 has the many-toothed abs.
I think the change was mid-year to the fewer-toothed abs, hence the axle part number change.
Mid 86 has rear chassis jack points visible from side view of car.

The early brakes are a known weak point, but the S brakes are excellent. I worked them pretty hard yesterday and had zero trouble, solid pedal and fade free, pulled up nice and strong...and I tend to brake late and hard. I have new pads, new rotors, new lines and rebuilt calipers, so they are working at their best. Don't knock the S brakes, they are very good on a street car. If you have issues they are either not in top condition, or you need to be on the track.
For track work, yes the S4 brakes are definitely a good upgrade. But if I was upgrading my brakes it wouldn't be S4...I'd go GTS/Big Reds at a minimum.

I have an '86 #0872. I'm don't know the daily production numbers, but this close to the change over I still have the older brakes with the bizarre abs teeth. That being said, I have no trouble with my brakes going into places like turn 5 or Canada corner at Road America ( don't say I must be going slow). I'm a late breaker because I trust the old brakes with good pads. I'd love to see what the better brakes can do if these are slouches.

Timing belt covers are different early 86 than 85 also.
86 has built-in indicators in the vent holes, 85 doesn't.
My early 86 also has the later TB tensioner.
It is not clear from the technical documentation when in 86 the changeover on some of the minor components was made.
