BTW
Anybody that thinks the cam gears are going to go 50,000 miles, which is the service interval for the belt, well good luck with that.
That is the kind of thing that has made me suspect every 928 timing belt regardless of how long ago it was done.
I have seen to many of them done half fast like that, where the owners thought they had 40-50,000 miles left on a belt, when the truth of it is a lot different.
I saw one last week with a "New" belt job, no way would it have went 5,000 miles.
Granted, those gears will go a bit further, but why in the world would anybody put a known suspect part back in is just beyond me.
I would also check the adapters very closely for cracks near the key way.
I have said my $.02 worth, you guys carry on.

So here's the update on the crank shaft gear. Putting a straightedge over the gear, holding it up to the light with one hand and taking a picture with the other was very difficult, but I digress....
It looks to me like 160,000 miles has worn a nice cup in the all the gear teeth.
I then took straightedge to the passenger side cam gear, where the four worn teeth are, and have they same issue. They are all cupped to some degree. This is probably due to the fact that once the coating wears off the gear teeth and exposes the bare aluminum, they start to wear very quickly. The places where the coating is still intact, perfectly flat.
So in conclusion, I just ordered a whole new set of gears (all 4) from Jeannie (928 Specialists, for those of you who don't know who Jeannie is).
It's just not worth the risk and worry about if and when something is going to go badly and fail.
Thanks to everyone for all your help.
