The seller is a very nice guy. I contacted him about the auction and he immediately ended it and restarted it w/o the stuff from my site.

Michael, why wouldn't you want to buy this car? or the other blue 95 GTS? While I've not watched your hunt closely I seem to recall many posts from you about cars that you've passed on for one reason or another. What exactly is it you are looking for?

Hi Chuck,

Here's my long, long answer, this one is way out of my price range. I've heard of sub-$20K GTS's being found-one can only hope.

My biggest mistake is not buying Mark Anderson's son's car, a 1991 S4. It would have been between 8-10K but at the time I could not get collector's insurance. Since then (December/January) a big accident came off my record and also another one is not showing up on MV reports and I was able to get qualified for insurance.

Right now I am in process on buying 1 of 4 cars, all S4s, just waiting on the PPI on 1 and financing numbers (JJ Best). 2 are Rennlister owned and maintained.

Realizing that this will not be a daily driver I'd much rather finance part of it than pay a lot out of pocket especially knowing that I will be putting money into it over time. I also plan to hold onto a car (unless I get a great offer) for a long time so I have no issue paying simple interest. Since the insurance is under $350/year, I don't care that I need to keep it with comp. & collision.

Most recently I passed on 3 cars due to test drives and sheer number of known issues that are at least a few thousand or more to fix-or are just a PITA.

I passed on 1 (the 1986.5 in San Francisco) due to the PPI. Another (Naples Florida) due to the sheer volume of corrosion on the underbody and lack of service history.

The 230K mile car was probably the best buy at $6000 but it was so far away and no set of eyes on it.

Honestly I don't expect any of these to be perfect-they are 15 or more years old, but I do want a good place to start from.

I'm trying to stay under $10K as New York State (and my county) will take 8.63% plus $195 for registration. Can't avoid those. I also have no idea what the financing approval will be. Expect to hear today. I have excellent credit and a solid, steady job (thank G-d) of almost 13 years and over 6 for my wife, but we have typical debt (all low-interest). I can clear it pretty quick with a 401k loan or in the event, G-d forbid, of job loss and not even feel it.

I also, quite frankly, was in process of fighting a lemon lawsuit with GM which I won, over my 2008 Saturn Vue XR; the engine failed at 14,400 miles. Even with a replacement engine (after over 30 days) the car was not right and gas mileage was horrendous. They agreed, prior to us ever having to go to court, to buy me out of my lease and refund all of my money. Until this was settled I couldn't show another car on my insurance or my credit reporting.

I now have a 2010 Subaru Forester XT Limited as my daily driver (in love with it) and now that that is settled, I have been on the full hunt.

So that is the long, long, honest answer.

A GTS for under $20k? Sounds like urban legend to me.... or, it needed $10k in work to make it presentable?

Sounds like you must be fairly young? You do realize it takes some pretty significant $ to keep these things on the road? Hopefully you can find the right car.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Chuck,

Thank you!

Actually it's one that belongs to a Rennlister and apparently it was one of those pure luck things.

If 41 is young, then yes-but not after my doctor's appointment yesterday.

I am well aware of the costs of upkeep which is why I am trying to balance the price/upkeep/monthly costs down.

I plan to do some wrenching on my own (I found out a local 928 owner has some warehouse space and tools); I used to work on my buddy's 426 Hemi's and 440s for drag competition in high school and have a very high knowledge of electrical systems including reading a schematic, soldering and using a multi-meter. I've stripped down engines before including rebuilding the heads. I cannot, however, machine anything worth a damn.

Time is my biggest issue. I also am lucky to be friendly with a body shop owner who has owned 928's and rebuilt some with accident damage. He's got a full alignment setup, aluminum painting facilities and does not believe in overspray ;-) Now if I could only find a lift to rent although he may let me use his from time to time.

Thanks!

Michael

Talk about a detailed listing!
It looks to have twice the miles to me based on the interior condition of mat, steering wheel and gear shift ****.

Well, look who's here....... So I guess you're also implying that the seller's DETAILED history listed in the auction would be made up.... right? So the car is a little dirty?

So, I'm not allowed to have an opinion? Purely a comment based upon the pics in the ad. And no, I didn't comment on the "DETAILED" history of the car at all.

You are but, you know what they say about opinions...... I'm not sure anybody here cares about yours? Either one.

Ah, Sam's car. I stand corrected although it was a special circumstance. She wanted it gone and gone quickly. Once in a lifetime opportunity perhaps?

I still think my $22K '93 5-speed with 100K and and $11K paint job (ask William A. or Greg, it's even better in person than it photographs) was a good deal, had I had the brains to ship it to CA rather than trying to drive it home....

Rob, you may not have gotten off cheaply, but the cost is amortized by the value it's given all of us watching your adventure of building a new engine and stuffing it in there.

Not that any of us are going to chip in, mind you...
