Default small wire in alternator bundle, what is it?

Doing all my power steering lines and after dropping the alternator, noticed a small black wire between the thicker bundles running into the area above the oil pan. looked cracked so i tugged it. The entire thing was disconnected. It has a small female type pin connector at the end and was in bad shape. Car ran fine up to winter storage, but I am curious as to what it should be connected to.

bump with a pic. Got a better vantage point and it connects to something mounted directly to the oil pan.

Patrick, that looks like the oil level sensor lead. Does it fit onto the top edge of the drivers side of the oil pan?

Yep, There is a pin connector that sticks up from the oil pan.

Am I to assume then it is not needed if the oil is checked regularly?

Thanks,

Patrick

I assume that it will hurt nothing to have that circuit working, just in case of some unforeseen issue.

That is the much better assumption!
