I thought the relay was for the wipers themselves.
and it's not mission critical until you get caught in a monsoon and wind up sitting on the side of the road till it passes!
No it doesn't operate the wipers in normal fixed speed modes (or tip to wipe mode) - that is all directly switched so you always have normal speed modes. The intermittent relay only controls the wiper parking and intermittent rate - so like I said not mission critical even in a rainstorm...

Have to find the instructions to be sure. The interval is set by sequential pulls on the lever. Am I doing something wrong?

Alan,
Do you know if the VW"197" relays are interchangeable with the VW"99" relays?
Thanks,
Best,

I had a signal light relay malfunction and bought one from a VW dealer that works just fine. Most of you probably already had that one figured out

Sounds like it... The rate is set only only by switching in and out of intermittent mode.

You can activate the washers as normal - but it has no effect on intermittent settings...

Does this mean that the rheostat under the pod is completely bypassed (i.e. I don't need to replace mine?)
