82 928 poor acceleration loss of power please help
Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum thing but i need some help with my 1982 928 5spd. The current issues I am having are: low idle (600 RPM), poor acceleration at all times, no power, hard cold start.
The car stutters off the line unless I keep the rpms high. Once it gets going no matter how I accelerate the car is very slow and has no power.
Originally the water pump had gone out so I put a new pump, belt and all tensioner parts. However the new pump's pulley was not set right from factory and was sitting to far out so it ended up shredding my new belt. I got another pump and belt and now the belt tracks fine. All marks on crank and cams line up at TDC. I have checked the timing with a timing light and it's perfect. The spark plugs have been changed and the cap and rotor contacts still look new. The wires do not seem to be arcing. I have checked for vacuum leaks but can't find any. (I haven’t changed any lines)
The car also has a cold start problem but I don't know if the problems are connected since the loss of power just started. The car takes forever to start in the mornings and after it's been sitting for a while. I've changed the temp II sensor. Now that the weather is warming up the problem is less evident.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am greatly depressed I can’t drive my shark.
Thanks,
Manny

It ran fine for a little over a month after the job. But that was my thought exactly to start there. I have rotated the crankshaft a few times and every two turns all markings are correct.

Replace your fuel filter. You may have high resistance in the filter element from debris causing your pump to over-work, and then you'll be replacing it, too.

I have ordered a fuel filter and it will take 3-5 days to get here. In the mean time I did a compressio test and the entire passenger side bank read exactly 130 and the entire drive side bank read exaclt 160???? any thouhouts?
Also I had just replaced the plugs about 5 months ago. And 6 out of eait of them have a lot of carbon build up?

Before I replaced my AFM, my '82 ran very rich and would often stall. The WSM has a procedure to check the opperation, once I replaced the AFM the car ran excellent.

Every sympton keeps leading me to the afm as well. They're expensive so i was hoping it was something else. I'll look in the manual and see if i can find the testing procedure.
The timing marks all line up at TDC, turn the crank 2 turns and they line up again. Could it be possible one of the cams is 180 degrees off?

Anything is possible. This problem of being 180 out is common on Isuzu Trooper engines because the pub is confusing, and techs do it wrong.
But I'm a beginner on 928's.

very unlikely to be the fuel filter....have had hundreds of people buy them but can not recall when it actually was the problem.
The low compression on the one bank is odd and normally indicates being a couple teeth off. What are the marks you are using on the cam gears ??
Also was wondering if the injection is working on that bank sounds almost like the car is running on 4 cylinders. Bad ground could take out one side.

I ordered a few AFMs and one of them fixed the issue. Although getting a used one will most likely have it's own issues at different RIM ranges. In the meantime while I was waiting for them to come in I took mine apart and saw it was very worn. I bent the contact arm very carefully and everything worked great after that. I belive their are instructions on you tube for this repair, but can't remember where I found the solution it's been a few years.
