OK, well that took a long time.
I finally changed the oil/filter, pulled the fuel injector relay and spun the engine. It took a couple of seconds and then the gauge jumped to two, then three, and then finally 5 bars. It looks like the fuel injector relay is bad as I had to jumper it to get it started.
So now, when I start the car, the oil pressure starts at 0, bounces a bit until it starts, and then jumprs right up to 5 bars, but my lifters are still a bit noisy and the red oil pressure warning light is on, so I'm not all that confident I have oil pressure.
Any idea what the red warning light would mean?
Thanks,

okay the gauge and red light are TWO different circuits....so if the pressure gauge is dead it will peg 5 bar the instant it gets power (does sound like yours is working)....the red light is a separate low oil pressure warning that I think sets off at under 1 bar or so.....

The oil pressure relief valve (near the filter) could also be stuck open. Try removing and cleaning the cylinder, spring and piston. The sender may have the wires reversed which will cause it to peg at 5 bar.

The noisy lifters are probably just from sitting. Check the oil pressure with an actual gauge and if it is normal, just let the engine warm up. Most lifter noise dissapears in an instant when the engine is up to operating temp.

The noise on the lifters has faded. I think the gauge is working because you can see it start to climb when I crank the engine.
Now I get to do the timing belt!
