Default Condoms for the Vacuum HVAC Actuators

No comments please, this did come from Roger himself
I have my brothers 86.5 dash out doing a low budget refresh. He has three actuators that have a small tears in them. It was mentioned that it would seal the actuator with out spending $49.00 each. Any feed back on this? If my wife finds out then I can always have an excuse and say it's for the 928, The next question is should I just carry one in the glove compartment or will she get suspicious. I don't want t Tiger Woods done on my car!!!!

You could tell her it is only for an emergency if you cut your finger and don't want blood on the interior of the car. Keep it in your car first aid kit.

Cheers,
Larry

never heard of using a condom but since your already in there then you are on the budget get the right bellows and replace them, much less expensive than 110.00 for a complete pod from the dealer. Also inspect the blower box pod as these also fail usually the pod next to the instrument pod is still good ( defroster pod) so it doesnt need replacement , but test it first

That's interesting. I guess if you don't carry the ribbed kind you are probably pretty safe with your 928 excuse.... How can you not comment on this!

I like it! Using a condom to prevent 'expensive repairs'. Seems apt!

Been done - one of the regulars at our local 928 monthly gathering used a condom to fix either his comb flap or recirculating actuator (I forget which). He figured that given they're electrically tested to be impermeable and strong, it should last. Its been at least three years since he first told us about it over a beer, and as far as I know its still working fine.

He also trimmed down part of the armature so it doesn't rub, as by his estimation when the actuator was sucked flat, it was pinching the edge of the old diaphragm which contributed to failure.

Then the upside is that if one of them breaks you could have one or more new little 928's running around your neighborhood!

I am sorry that I just read this for the first time now but I can't resist commenting on Mr. Merlin's comment...

"never heard of using a condom but since your already in there then you are..."

If you are already in there then why put on the condom?

: )

Pure latex seems like an awfully poor choice, they don't like exposure to air and ozone at all. Either put in a replacement factory type diaphragm or a new pod, way too much work to have it fail in a year or so.

I use a thicker latex glove sometimes working on cars or light tasks, and they rarely last more than a couple hours, and just poof with contact to some auto products.

Paraphrasing - when the diaphragm fails use a condom instead.

Are condoms pure latex? anybody make Nitryl rubber condoms ? or even silicone rubber ones ?

Update on Vacuum actuator diaphragms.
We sell the replacements for the center and footwell and they are $46.50 each. They are made of flurosilicone so should last a long time.
The diaphragms for the defrost and recirculation actuators are not available.
We do sell the complete actuators.
Defrost = $43
Recirculation = $21

What does a condom cost these days?
