Sorry to hear that! No help here as my mechanic installed it but I figured I would let you know that mine works beautifully. Awesome mod. Once you get it sorted out you will love it.
Good luck!

How is the rear shift coupler?

The brace is installed correctly.
I responded to your other post in Herman's thread.
However you can remove those washers as they should not be required.
The problem is that when you removed the rear coupler (or someone in the past has), the pinch sleeve for the shift rod to the universal was not tightened in the correct orientation.
To fix this, put the car in 4th gear, slide under the back and loosen the pinch sleeve.
Have a helper push the shift lever to the far right and up slightly as if it was in 4th gear.
While they are holding it nice and tight, tighten the pinch bolt in the back (2 13mm wrenches).
Once that is done you will be able to access all gears.

No, there is no need/requirement to slide the splines off/on.
Once the pinch bolt is loosened it will rotate on the splines as they are small and the inner bore of the front shift rod is smooth.
