Default X-Pipe Installed, GTS now throwing Check Engine Light

That's pretty much the scoop.

Intstalled the X-Pipe From Roger with high flow cats. New O2 sensor and cut the belt on the smog pump.

Drove the car and it sounds really MEAN, drove great for 30 minutes. No problems. Found that I just give her gas in 5th gear and she wants to go. No more downshifting to 4th to pass!!

Stopped at the store on the way home, jumped back in and now she's throwing a check engine light. Any ideas on Troubleshooting?? Next steps?? Hammer Time??

Did you plug all the lines from the smog pump? That might be sucking air. There was another thread about a car not running well after a smog pump delete and that was one of the things that was talked about... Could be a bad new O2 sensor I suppose... Get this all figured out Chuck, because I want to do this to my '92 as well!

I know what it sounds like

I kept the old O2 when we did mine. Only issue was the whistling sound from the pipe that used to be connected to the old cat. Cutting the smog pump belt stopped the annoying sound.

We did put in a new O2 and cut the belt for the air pump.

We need to put the hammer on it Chuckles.

In selling H/X pipes for well over a decade I have seen this occasionally, disconnect ground strap for an hour or so, reconnect and drive.

If that doesn't do it, it may be something more (pinched wire and/or defective O2, etc.), read out the flash codes and go from there.

It is probably recording the "I am a 5 speed and this extra power is way more than I can handle code".
As Sean says just put the hammer on her and we will know exactly what is going on.
Nice job Chuck - not often we get to see you using a wrench 8>)

No one mentioned that Chuck did the work... hell, he probably plugged the new O2 into the Cylinder temp probe.!!

JUST KIDDING CHUCK! IIRC you did a good job on a set of S4 update calipers on the 79 in Wichita, KS many years ago. :-)

Hope you get it figured out Chuck. I put the x-pipe on my GTS sans cats with no CEL. It does sound like a mean beast at that!!!! I'm almost afraid to try the GT mufflers as it might be too loud....... Keep us posted.

Wait a minute, he didn't do that job either, I stood next to him as the shop mechanic did the conversion. But now I can say "Chuck is pretty sure which end of a screw driver to hold on to."

Chuck,

I am guessing that stop at the store is your problem. You did not spend enough on easter baskets, nor the wife! The CE light gods are punishing you!

As a side note, rack bushings did help. And yes Webster can have them out in less than 5 minutes once rack is loose! Wheel is much firmer, and does not jump out of the lane on 407.

Well I do for sure remember Chuck taking off the rear dust shields, I distinctly remember he asked me for a consult about getting them off...and I swear he had some dirt on his hands. :-)

Come on Chuck, fill in the blanks in Jim's and my memories, we are getting old and can't remember stuff that long ago.

Dang!

Rough crowd on Easter Morning!!

I thought I'd wake up to a

"Dude it's going to be ok, don't worry about it, we have a fix for you, btw have a great Easter, yada yada yada."

But Nooooooooo!!!! (best John Belushi voice)

DR,
Yeah, Based on direction from Sean and his mechanical skills,I tried to actually screw the O2 sensor into the pass coolant drain plug but it wouldnt fit, not to mention the fact that I got a face full of coolant!
Good idea on the ground. I'll do that first and see if it cures the problem.

Roger,
Sean said that he disabled the ""I am a 5 speed and this extra power is way more than I can handle code".
If the ground doesn't work, You know I"ll be over later this week for the Hammer Hookup!!

BTW, I noticed that the idle is a little higher than it was as well. Now in between 900 and 1,000 RPM. (used to be below 900) Will the hammer reset all this??

Also, I did not jack w plugging any of the hardware associated with the airpump, we just cut the belt and left the plumming in place. When we do the tbwp (next job on the list) I'll eliminate all that with the non-airpump porkentensioner. Anything vacuum lines or anything that needs to be plugged in the meantime??

Gracias!!

Brad,
Glad the bushings worked out!! I think Webster's place has the record for avg time start to finish on all these rack bushings. What is it, like less than 30 min start to fishish??!!!

DR, Jim,
If you remember, I LET Mo's mechanic do the front S4 Brake conversion on the 79. I was going to do it myself, but I could not hold the camera and torque everything to spec at the same time. S**t, I'm only human!!

Classic symptom of needing readaptation after H/X pipe install. The additional free flowing air pi$$es of the LH and needs to be reset. Pull the ground strap, wait, reattach, drive.

On the pre-Check Engine light S4s that had issues after H/X install, the higher idle was the only sign.
