When you adjusted the modulator did you turn it clockwise or counterclockwise? You said it also clunks at times. Do you mean it shifts hard?
Clockwise on the modulator increases the pressure but makes it shift harder. Counter clockwise lowers the pressure and makes the shifts softer.
On mine, I adjusted the slack out of the cable, and actually turned the modulator counter clockwise about 2 notches which seemed to do the job. I may get back under it and turn it back one more notch.
As for the slipping, the first thing is to make sure your fluid level is correct. If you have to add fluid, you have to do it while the engine is running. Someone else mentioned using TransX. I've used both the Lucas and TransX snake oil. I think they're both about the same thing. You may want to add a quart of that to see if it improves anything. It might.
These transmissions are pretty robust. You said the problem arose when you tried to adjust the Bowden cable. So just undo the last thing you did before the problems started.

Yeah, I turned the mod. valve tee counter clockwise. I guess I will try changing the fluid and mod. valve then readjust pressure. Thx for all the support.
