James, your bases are covered.

Anyone in his right mind will admire that shade of blue, and crave that shape of blue.

I INTEND on learning everything I can about the 928, but there is currently a very large knowledge gap in what might be assumed by many here on this forum. Much of the initial maintenance (the first year anyway) I will rely on professional mechanics. That being said, I am an extremely interested in learning and doing most of the maintenance myself. I just expect that as cars get older, the knowledge base for maintenance is reduced to fewer and fewer "experts". Therefore, you have to rely more and more on yourself. And, that is my intention.

You also hit the nail on the head when you said that I might not ever have a chance to buy so much car for so little. What an insightful statement. My intention is to keep this car for a very very long time. It might very well be my last Porsche if all my goals are realized.

I was having a conversation with my wife at lunch today, and we both had an epiphany. She likes "new" cars for the perceived perception of security and less reliance on the "unexpected". I like the older cars for the desire I had for them growing up and aging. I can still remember the first 911 I saw and the unique sound it made as he accelerated away. I can still remember the first 928 I saw. These were occasions that had an impact on the things I enjoy in my life. As my interests are refined and develop, I realize that I truly desire to know more and more about the items that I enjoy in life.
So, while I am ignorant about many things that many assume on this forum, I am a very willing and avid student.

Martin,

You don't have to worry about offending me. I have very thick skin! I greatly appreciate your feedback! I have many short-comings in regards to 928's. It's why I am soaking up everything I can about them.

I love the anecdotes regarding the horse trading. The one thing though to counter that is that I keep hearing "patience", now is a "buyers" market. And, it is that market that I intend to use to "get it all". In other words, I will cling to the hope that I can find the color and the condition of the 928 that I desire. Now, writing it in a forum is certainly different than living it! I'm trying to be methodical, but the love or our cars is more than that. We tend to feel emotion about what we drive. Whether we like the look, sound, heritage or handling of what we drive, we inhabit these forums because we have a passion for our automobiles.

And Stephen,

Although I am very new here, I can see how valuable this community is. I hope to learn a great deal here. And in the future, maybe even return some of it back. But, I'm a long way from that right now!
If you have the desire to learn, there is no reason why you can't do absolutely every bit of maintanence on a 928. Start simple, learn your way around the mechanicals and with the help of this forum you will soon be tackling jobs you never dreamed you would do yourself.

I went into 928 ownership with the full intent of learning how to work on the car as part of learning a new hobby. It really changes your relationship with the car when you understand how she runs, and have the satisfaction of knowing that you are keeping her in great shape. Having another car that you can drive while you take your time learning how to do a major project is vital to being able to enjoy that though, and it looks like you have that base covered.

You are in the right place if you are getting ready to jump in the shark tank, because the help available here has been invaluable to me.

There are some very nice well cared for 928s currently on the market. I am aware of a couple of excellent examples of S-4s here in SoCal Good luck on your search
