check the starter connections if you reinstalled the wires incorrectly then you will fry the new resistor

Chasing an issue on my '79 I discovered that the voltages at the coil are very strange. I don't now recall what they were, but I was convinced they were not right. Till I tracked down an old school Bosch Technician ard he assured me that they were all well within specification, and yes the problem was elsewhere!
So don't be suprised when coil voltages are not what you would expect.

Did you 'cowboy' the starter swap, that is, do it without disconnecting the battery? If so, and you touched the starter trigger lead and the battery cable together while diconnecting/reconneting, it will damage that resistor.

If you run a full 12 volts to the coil on a very hot day inching along the 91 FWY the oil in the coil can explode (boil) and pop the end off the coil.....having a spare in the track box allowed me to replace and be rolling in just a few minutes Then got the new Mercedes resisters and installled them !

Is there a market for an air-to-oil intercooler for the coils? (I'm thinking along the lines of some billet fins...)

Yes we did....this is probably what happened...& we also have the mini starter too...& I know it requires 1 less wire for hookup.....
I will have it fixed later this week.....but double checking the starter wiring is #1 since that is probably what fried it in the 1st place!!!
