My drivers side Woofer speaker cover pulled right off easily and what I found is that the speaker shell had broken tabs which explains why it popped off so easily. It also explains the rattle I get at higher volumes.

My passenger side on the other hand is very difficult to remove. Does someone have a trick for removing these covers without damaging the cover or the tabs?

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't these unscrew? I watched Bill Perry take my drivers door woofer off because it had broken screw holes so it was flopping around...I recall him just carefully and with some effort unscrewing it.

THey should unscrew not pull off, at least mine are that way.

So they twist off? That's how the drivers side came off but the passenger was much more difficult and I didn't want to break anything. 20 year old plastic!

I'll go give it some more effort, hopefully I won't need to replace both of them but then again they both sound lousy so maybe I should.

usually the plastic will unscrew but its also usually cross threaded so be careful you can also use these old grills if you get the same size spearkers to replace the factory units

Well I did get them off but it required two steps. First was to twist it and the second was to use a small flathead screw driver to carefully pull them off. Luckily the second one came off without damage.

The drivers side grille needs to be replaced, it has a few small dents which I can't repair. Can't believe they cost $57.00 Ea!

Not sure what to do about the speakers. Preference would be to replace with the same but I think they're NLA. Need to make some calls this week.

+get some some 5 min epoxy and reseal the grills to the plastic .
Try painting the grills with some Krylon semi flat for a brand new grill and plastic

The grills are held on with the tabs right now, will the epoxy reduce the vibration caused by the woofers?

You're reading my mind regarding the paint. I was considering using the satin black trim paint for the grill but the small dents will still be present. I'm still debating if I should replace or just respray. I know I'm getting carried away but I have always felt that the small details are an important part of making the car look and feel new.

I might just sell the old one for $20 and pay the difference for the new one. Luckily the other side looks perfect.

My '89's speaker covers clip on - no screwing at all. It has the 10 speaker factory original setup (two per door, two each side behind front seats, one each side in rear hatch area).

Each plastic cover (including the grille held on with tabs) has pairs of plastic tabs 120 degrees apart that clip into slots on the surround, and hold the cover on. There's a slight gap between each pair where you can insert a wide screwdriver (8mm head) and gently pry the tabs out. Do that for two of the 3 locations, and the cover comes off easily.

I've been looking at them for a week here on my desk while I let the quarter panels soak up Leatherique, debating whether to try gluing the plastic surrounds to repair them (4 are cracked), or just buying new ones for those locations.

With the grills out, I were able to hammer out a smaller dent quite easily. Remove grills from plastic frames, use a hard flat surface and carefully tap them with the hammer from both sides. Respray and they looks like new

My speakers are going or gone. I have been fearful of just prying the grills off.

I would like to see some pictures of what the grill looks like from the back. Thank you for your help.

IIRR there are two versions of covers and later are screw version. if there are three small gaps then its clip version.

Yes my MY88 had the screw on covers and they were always easy to remove by hand.

Now currently drive MY91 and that has the clip-on covers.
