hello,

im trying to find a vapour leak. My mech replaced a washer in the fuel filter that reduced the smell but it’s still there. I can smell fuel at the back of the car and smelled around the fuel tank sending unit. There’s definitely an odour coming from there but it’s bone dry. I also don’t have any liquid fuel on the ground. Merlin, you mentioned removed the metal ring to check the connection hoses to the fuel tank above. What are your thoughts around a vapour leak in this area?

could the sending unit be the source with no liquid fuel leak? My mech seemed to think there’d be liquid fuel there if the o ring had failed. He was thinking the neck or I guess some of the lines near it? I’m just confused about why I can smell fuel in the sending unit area?

hi Merlin,

I took a picture of the fuel sender and fuel pump assembly. I can smell fuel from the sender but there is no liquid at all. The mechanic changed a brass washer in the fuel pump assembly, I don’t know if there’s several or just one? I did note there was dirt and discolouration on the fuel pump cover panel. I read that’s a sure sign of a leak. It didn’t seem wet though and like I said, the mech changed a washer so maybe that solved one problem? I cleaned the cover and will check it again after the next big drive.

please let me know your thoughts about the pictures and thanks again!!

So it looks like fuels leaking down from somewhere higher up on the side of the tank what I’ve seen is the transfer a hose usually springs a leak and that’s the hose that goes from the main body to the top of the neck of the fuel inlet Roger has a new new hose that’s from the older car that’s a lot stronger to replace it with otherwise the common leak point is that short hard line that goes to the fuel pump people over tighten the cabinet and crushed that banjo fitting and then it makes the pipe uneven and no amount of washers on there will seal it because it’s not flush anymore sometimes you can take that pipe off and sand the edges down so that they’re flat again and then put it on otherwise it’s best just to buy a new pipe put some anti-seize on the cabinet threads and put the cap on and don’t make it real tight but tight enough to seal also the return line that goes to the top of the center that can sometimes start leaking at the swage and the swages under the the hatch floor so if you get an inspection MARIE you should be able to see it see if it’s wet usually would replace that if you drop the tank
