Default Reverse lockout spring

I have my trans out replacing the shifter centering spring and noticed the reverse lockout spring is broken as well. The finger is completely broken off at the base, however, my reverse lockout was somehow still functioning perfectly. I could not engage reverse after engaging first gear, it would just slide right over into second. Is this spring even needed???

Spring is there to make sure lock will always work, especially when moving flat out on bumpy road. Usually lock works ok when standind still when spring is totally gone but fail when its most needed. Unless spring condition is known its proper function should never be trusted even if it seems to work fine in parking lot speeds.
