My '90 S4 rear spoiler is black (standard I guess).
I'm wondering if Porsche had an option for a painted rear spoiler in the same color as the car itself ?

I've seen some photo's on the web and I think it looks GREAT!

Mine are all painted to match the car, but I got replacements from Vertex (fiberglas) and had them refinished to match. Some folks like the originals, and others painted. It's just a matter of taste. I believe some of the late models came with painted wings, but the knowledgable ones will chime in, I;m sure.

Just make yourself happy.

All S and S4 came from Porsche with a black spoiler. All GTS came with a painted wing (same color as car).
When you see a S4 with a painted spoiler, it as been painted by the owner (or body shop).

Edit: Just found that Porsche DID offer and option with the rear wing painted for the S4. Not many had it here I think!

In general its easier to paint an aftermarket (fiberglass) wing than a factory unpainted wing - due to the materials, prep issues and surface flex of the original wings.

Even the factory GTS painted wings suffer from the surface flex issues (paint cracks from handing after the paint fully hardens).

The factory wing can be sanded smooth cleaned very well to remove all the rubber shine products and painted as was done for the GTS. Use some flexative additive to the paint and it should last for years. Note that rear spoiler DELETE was a factory option as well ! The aftermarket fiberglass wings do not line up well with the existing bolt holes and some have delaminated where the two halfs were glued together. The mold used makes a top and a bottom which are then glued together. Most important is to not use it as a handle to lift the rear hatch, keep the airsprings fresh to make opening easier.

Strosek & Jaquemond wings line up pretty well but are both well over $1000, the cheaper wings not so well, and the mounting points are not always very well made either.

Agreed you can make a stock wing paintable - but its a lot of work to get a perfect finish and yes the paint certainly needs a flex agent...

Even then the Porsche paint (presumably w/ flex agent) lasted OK for only about 11 years on my stock GTS wing (baking in the AZ sun some of the time) but then it started cracking (hairline paint cracks)...

I posted pictures of a delaminated fiberglass wing (sold it) so yes they can fall apart...

I now have a painted Jaquemond wing on my GTS - no surface flex to worry about & finish is very very good

On the factory S4 wing, I would say an adhesion promoter is the critical ingredient in making anything stick. But even adhesion promoter is a moot point if you don't get every molecule of Armor All removed first.

It was only available in '91 MY S4 and GT.

GTS can have matte black spoiler from factory but I believe its not same as S4 version. Its GTS smooth spoiler painted in matte black. Option code M596. I believe this is one such GTS.

I want to do the same thing, to have my rear wing painted to match the car's color.

I was talking with Mel (928OC rep here in FL) and he had it done at a local paint shop for $200. They did the flexible additive thing, etc. It looks great on his wife's 928 S4 and I want to do the same on my car.

What I would like to do is to buy an S4 wing for my '88 and have it painted. Then just swap the painted wing for the one currently on the car.

Does anyone have a OEM S4 wing hanging around they want to sell? Let me know.

It all comes down to what you like. I have an Audi TT rear spoiler fitted and painted the same platnum metallic and I think it looks perfect.

Last week I found a spoiler on the web. I believe it comes from a '91 model but the guy already prepared it for respray.
Not sure what to expect for € 100,- but I thought I give it a try.

That is consistent with what I have seen. I have yet to come across a GTS with a rear spoiler in the old matte black pebble finish.
