Malcolm, I'm betting on the fuel pump. I remember reading somewhere on the old 928 email list that the pumps were good for about 100k miles and go out without warning. Sure enough, right around 100k miles on my GT, I was on way to a meeting and drove over a railroad crossing (slight bump) and car just died. Was the fuel pump(s). Replaced and no issues since. Looks like you're close to that milage.
Ironically, hearing from Louie re: the LH, a few years back I was on my way to DEVEK Days and my car died on I-5 in the middle of nowhere. Diagnosis over the phone with Marc Thomas was the LH. Fortunately Louie had brought his spare LH to the event and Marc graciously brought it down to save me at about 1:00am. Car started right up with Louie's LH, but Marc and I didn't get back to the Bay area until about 4:00am the day of the DEVEK event! Louie generously loaned me his LH to get back to Phoenix, but needed it back not long after. I plugged my original LH back in just for fun and the car started up and ran fine. That's been years ago now with no LH issues since. May have been just the big "D" connector had some corrosion or something on it that unplugging and plugging it in a few times helped to clean off... FWIW.

I remember that well. Good times in those days. On long trips I always carried a spare LH, fuel pump, MAF, and clutch flex hose. I never needed them myself, but was able to help a few people who did.

Malcolm. unplug the 35way plug on the LH, make sure no signs of mositure in the connector of the LH ECU. Plug/unplug a couple of times, the contacts are self cleaning.
Did you disturb any thing in the engine bay bewteeen when no-start and when it started again ?
I was thinking maybe a short on the injectior harness somewhere that may have been disturbed (or even shorts when warm from engine heat).

Nothing distrubed in the engine bay John.
Other than checking the FP fuse, jumping the FP relay and disconnecting and reconnecting the battery nothing else was moved.
I can check the LH connector but doubt there's any corrosion............we have a very dry climate on the Eastern side of the Rockies.

Malcolm, what about that ground connector near the top, back of the engine block?
It carries the ground for the MAF, LH, EZ, O2 and a couple other things.
Mine was bad where the wires entered the ring terminal, making intermittent contact until one day it just wouldn't run.

That particular ground was cleaned when I did the intake r&r but it wont hurt to double check.
I'm going to double check everything again but given that the FP and LH are original it is time 22 years and 170k kms.

Malcolm, my GT has been an AZ car since day one, and we are in a VERY dry climate still may have been some sort of corrosion on the LH connector. Whatever the problem was, unplugging and plugging the connector seemed to ultimately do the trick.

I inspected the LH connector and it was clean but even so I performed the unplug/replug of the connector several times (after battery disconnect).
The car started again with no issues............I've ordered a fuel pump anyway.

Follow up to this thread.............new fuel pump rxd and installed..........thx Roger for the rush ship.
The fuel pump r&r is quite simple but be aware that any fuel pressure sprays all over. Batt disconnect, clamp the input rubber fuel line tight, disconnect the pump to filter line then the clamp. The pump is then in your hands so disconnect of the electrical wires is easy.
Install was reverse of the removal with the exception of triple checking that theres no leaks.
Outcome:
car starts and runs perfectly, idle and full load............she did 200 no worries. Also, the pump is quiet when running.
Idle is strong but high which is unrelated I believe.
Hope this helps all

So the question remains in my mind. Replace the fuel pump just because at 100k or wait til it dies. We only have ethanol fuel here so I could be in for it sooner rather than later.

Jeff.............I posed the same question re. the LH a few years ago.............its not a matter of if but when.
Given my disappointment and embarassment when my car broke down I'd replace them both at the 20 year mark regardless if the cars running well or not.
