Came across this thread, and I hate to be a total "newbie", but what/where is this green wire that I have seen several people refer to in this and other threads.
I don't think that my 86.5 is a sloth, but I have never been able to just jump in the car and burn the tires at will. It is a little slow off the line, but then builds up steam like a freight train! Is this indicative of mine being lower in power than it should be?? If so, any suggetions on where to start looking?? I was looking today for this WOT switch and did not see it on the car so I was trying to find directions to it's location.

Pcplod - it's not going to be quick off the line, but can be a lot better with chip upgrade. For me, eBay chips were a huge improvement from stock and Porken's chips are a huge improvement over the eBay chips.
Get Porken's chips, even if not the "300's" that require the higher regulator. You will be happy to see your car run significantly better. If you don't mind changing the regulator, then get the "300's"...easy and straight forward to make the change and chip swap.

I thought that all the Porken chips were a straight swap. What is the regulator that you have to change with the 300??

I have the manuals that are online at canell.co.uk. They are great, but I sometimes have a hard time navigating through them, and I find that I learn more if I just go out and poke around under the hood.

Found the dyno results below last night while I was filing all the receipts and stuff from the PO of the GTS. I'm guessing this is about 10 years old. There's aboutt 60 928s--all makes and models. Good indicator of what mods result in HP gain. / Bruce

I guess that was the whole idea behind this thread. I don't think the 928 was ever designed to be a jet car off the line, though it should not be a slug either. From what you have described, I would start with the bowden cable, throttle linkage and WOT. There is lots of info within the forum to help you locate and test these known issues. I would also test the kickdown switch.

Yep, great thread. I adjusted my Bowden cable, and now my tranny will downshift when I mash the throttle a little bit. I need to adjust it again because first hangs on too long now.

PCPLOD Your 86.5 should smoke the tires with ease. My 79 will smoke thru 1st into 2nd everyday all day. Ask me how I know. Honestly my day does not seem right unless I rip thru the gears to 6000 rpm and hear that V8 at least once a day.
If it is a auto you are probably starting off in second gear. Fix that and enjoy!
Otherwise fix what is wrong. Bring it to a dyno and do a pull for 20 bucks or so and you will have a good idea where you stand.

OSP, you missed something. At least from your list.
Bowden cable. I'd bet a 100% sirloin burger lunch that you have Grandma Buick syndrome. Its different than the kickdown switch.
Put two turns on the turnbuckle to shorten the cable. It'll hold its shifts longer. It should have just a bit of tension on it, no slack or very little once its reseated on the ball after adjustment.
(At the throttle body, not the throttle connection, the other turnbuckle thats near the throttle, I think is down lower. You will need to pull the airbox and reach around the back under the spider, and maybe reach in front. A bit contortionist, but doable.) A long thin screwdriver helps pop it off the ball, and can be used to pop it back on. You will need a couple of small open end wrenches, can't remember 6,7,8 mm, to undo the jam nut.
On the timing, set it to specification, don't use abnormal advance.

I think that you it must be the Bowden cable. My tranny won't shift down any lower than third gear unless you are only doing about 25 mph. If I stomp on the throttle at 40 mph, it just picks up speed in third with no downshifting, but it seemd to go up through the gears just fine.
Again, sorry for my newness. Does mine adjust up by the intake (like you described above), or do I need to look someplace else??

IMHO from what you've indicated, if it pulls strong from 4500rpm to the limiter, then it sounds like a normal stock S3 powerband. Aside from normal tune-up stuff to have it running as it should, some $$ is required to bump response/performance (chips, x-pipe, cats, etc).
Oh, missed your previous Q on Porken's chips. Yes, the 300's req'r a FPR swap, either to an '87 FPR or AFPR that needs to be set at Ken's stated 58psi. He used to offer a lower performance version to use the stock S3 FPR, but I don't see it on his site --> worthwhile to ask if still available (or he might chime in here). Again though, not going to be free solutions.

Definitely adjust the bowden cable to your up/down liking, but when you mash the throttle, you're triggering the little kick-down switch on the floor that should force it to downshift to 2nd (won't hit 1st unless <~25). UNLESS, you are already in 2nd at 40mph, which could be the case and feel kinda sluggish with stock chips until ~60mph.
Someone else mentioned that I might be starting out in 2nd gear. I am sure that I am starting out in 1st, it just doesn't take off like a crotch rocket from a stop. That said, like I mentioned earlier, I have NEVER gotten it to shift down lower than 3rd gear when I get on it while I am rolling. So does that sound more like a Bowden cable adjustment or the kick-down switch??
