Default Trans noise?

So, when i am in first gear i get a slight.....rotational clicky, clacky, grindy noise... and only in first. clutch in........ no noise.......... shift to another gear fine. im thinking syncro? this is my first manual trans i have ever had "noises" from. and if i go in to rebuild the trans, anything special i should to to make it better? can i stick a LSD in it? or maybe a new model trans in its place?

thanks guys!

Synchros don't usually make that kind of noise. Bearings usually make the noise in more than one gear. Sounds like chipped gears to me. An expensive, complex repair...

Can the reverse lockout mechanism be rattling around in there?
