With the engine hot, open the hood, reach in and rev the engine to about 3000 RPM - there should be a very noticeable blast of air from the belt-driven fan after a five-second or so delay. The noise level should also increase.

While this condition is most often air flow related, it can also be caused by a water pump that doesn't move enough coolant at idle speeds. Let the engine idle long enough to get pretty hot (approx 210-220 deg F), then spray a fine mist of water on the radiator. If the temp drops very quickly to 180 or so, the problem is air flow. If the temp drops only a little and drops slowly, suspect coolant flow.

If you have one of the non-contact IR thermal guns, you can check for even temps across the radiator - just stay out of the belts and fans!

Wally,
I think you are pulling out auwl the stops now! I like the rapid rad cooling concept in checking for water pump flow.

Thanks,
ED

I want to thank all for your comments and insights. My mother has just passed away Thursday the 4th so I will be putting on hold any wrenching for a week or so. When the overheating gremlin is pinpointed I will post my results and awards will be issued.

Blessings,
ED

Ed,

928 problems are way, way down the list in importance. I'm sorry to hear about your Mom - I still miss mine almost constantly after 19 years...

My condolences and best wishes to your and your family.

Wally
