1989 is the year with GT's and 5-speed S4's.
Any / all 5-speed 91's are going to be a GT unless someone did a transmission swap.

No matter what year (89-92), if it has an automatic it's an S4 since all GT's are 5-speeds (unless someone did a transmission swap....).

I wonder, how many GT owners have checked to see if their car still has a GT transmission?

Actually, Hacker is about half right (or half wrong depending on your persepctive.)

All 1990 and 1991 5-speeds were GT's from the factory. There are two key tells, one is the transmission, but rarely do these get shanged. The other is the engine. Just below the passenger side of the water bridge is where the engine model and serial number are. A GT engine will be stamped "M28/47" and is the definitive mark of a GT engine.

All 90 and 91 cars (and GTS's) have PSD as standard equipment regardless of the transmission. But some have been removed as they are very expensive to replace.

As to gear ratios I believe the final drive on the '89 is still a 2.20, but for the 90 and 91 S4's its a 2.54. The GT has a 2.73.

Andrew has it almost correct.

All automatics from '89 S4 and GTS models have 2:54 diffs.
All manual GT and GTS models have the 2:73 diffs.
The exception is the manual '89 S4 which had the coveted 2:64 diff.

87-91 automatic transmission is an S4 PERIOD! Automatic = S4...end of story (for MY 87-91...how many more ways can I say the same thing)

90 and 91 5spd cars are GT's...PERIOD, end of story! ONLY MY 89 had BOTH 5spd GT's (they had different cam shafts and different wheels and they only built like 125 of them) and S4's with a MANUAL transmission. There were OF COURSE 87 and 88 S4's with automatics and 5spds but none were called 928 GT.

Any '92 model year 928 is a GTS and none were imported to the US...well, except mine, but I did that on my own, Porsche never brought any over here...

Ok, gotta know.......why is the 2.64 dif. coveted? What's wrong with my 2.73 anyway? Do I have to sell? James offered $10K once, right after my t. belt light came on.

It's only coveted until it breaks. Then you'd be screwed and coveted
