Default Ultrasonic leak detector any good?

I came across this tool mentioned in one of the classic car mags this side of the pond.

http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/s...k-detector.asp

I don't have any seal leaks but was intrigued by this one, as an alternative to chalk dust, pouring water over hatch etc. As a tool junky I'm trying hard to resist!

Just wondered if anyone had used anything like it and how useful it proved (if at all).

Please note I've no connection with Sealey or the retailer whose ad I've linked. Just curious!

We use them in industrial environments to find compressed gas leaks, vacuum leaks, and with an ultrasonic transmitter to diagnose seal, gasket, and air infiltration/exfiltration issues on insulated enclosures. With a surface contact tip we can also listed to fluid flows through pipes, valves and steam traps to check proper function and diagnose flow issues The ones we use perform well regardless of background noise levels. and are quite robust. You could use one of these units to listen to the fuel flow of individual injectors to find untis not firing or opening as well as finding those pesky intake vacuum leaks. Like anything you will get what you pay for in terms of performance. The ones we use run about $450US for the full kit.

Either buy a really good one, ($$) or save your money.

I have used the hobby type ones with little success.

Even the good one my Body shop guy had did not work well on my Corvette.

It takes a really good engineer to make almost every one ever made leak water and wind.
