Default Headlight motor reversed?

So I installed a new headlight motor today and it's doing something strange:

When I turn the switch off, the lights go up, but the lights don't come on.

When I turn the switch on, the lights go down and the bulbs turn on.

Do I have a wiring problem? I moved the wires over per the old motor.

What car do you have and what car did the motor come out of - there are 2 different motor types pre-S4 and S4+ they are totally incompatible...

Are you sure you have the motor correctly installed with the drive arm in the right place/orientation

It's a 1980 S2. The motors are identical. I have no idea if I have the arm clocked right. How do you do this? Is it possible I have it 180 degrees off?

Turn the lights off. Disconnect the arm and install it so that the lights are down. Check operation.
