I tried to do a search on the 928 BBS page, but i did not find any information on converting an early 928 body rear to a S4 style. Has anyone taken an OEM rear S4 and put it on their early body style 928?

if possible, please provide a link

It has been done; search the forum and you will find numerous threads...

It is not as simple as just swapping the bumpers & lights, however...major modifications must be done to the rear sheet metal where the tail lights mount, i.e., lots of cutting, etc, and new wiring harnesses must be spliced in as well...as I said, search the forum and you will find all of the information you seeking.

There are no more new rear S4 bumper covers, only the GTS style with the reflector bar across the rear. No biggie if you've got a line on a good used one, but be aware.

There is an excellent write up on it somewhere... Not finding it at the moment. As Mark said, it is not a simple bolt on swap, as the rear body tub and fenders are different.

i just completed this job for Bill (ICCY928) on here. It is a challenge even for a seasoned fabricator/bodyman to do this right. I could go into detail, but I'm too wore out from doing it to even write about it. Just finished the car tonight and Bill's on his way here now.

The area behind the tailites has to be moved in (towards the front of the car). The bottom of the quarter panel has to be trimmed upwards to match the side of the rear bumper.
The area between the tailites at the top of the rear body panel must be recessed inboards (towards the front of the car).
Finding the areas to be modified & figuring out how far they had to be moved was the hardest part for me. The sheet metal fabrication I thought was the easiest part. Pics......

Is the AIR update as complicated to pull off? I know they sell the fiberglass. Maybe it's another option?

The AIR rear cover moves the lights a little lower to avoid having to do the sheet metal waork. As far as I know, you only need to drill some holes to mount the lights and swap out the pig tails to make the AIR cover work.

many thanks for the updates gentleman. I did not think of an aftermarket update. I'll check out AIR website tonight. I would assume its expensive though.

Given the metalwork involved in the porsche parts, it's probably cheaper to go the AIR route.

Far less expensive to just buy another car with the back end you want than to modify an older body style...... From this I am expert.

I have the ability to mod my car fairly cheap due to a friend who is a professional welder and painter. I have installed RSR bumpers before on my 911's. So i can't imagine it being very tough.

Anyways...just doing the math....

The ebay molding looks interesting, but i am unsure if it would fit an 86.5 928S.
