Default What is this piece??

Came home from work feeling pretty good and decided to drool on my engine. Opened the hood and noticed this remnant of something on the engine block behind the center radiator hose. Also found oil and water in the block cavities under the hose. What is it? (Please, be gentle)

It looks kind of like a little porcupine skin, Ed. Have you been driving in the country?

Hopefully it's one of the other belts or just something you sucked up off the roadway... pull the air tubes and look down the vents on top of the cam covers to inspect for belt problems.

Yeah the flashlight illumination adds a road-kill kinda feel. Had the TB and WP changed about 10 months ago and adjusted about 8 months ago. What is a belt cover??

Pull one of the intake tubes, take your flashlight and peer down the small vent that goes into the hole on the bottom. You will be able to see the belt where it rides on the upper cam gear. Look for signs of abrasion and more bits of shredded belt.

Thomas, you may well be on to something... But, I'd still check the belt just to eliminate that as an issue.

How many blau 5-speed owners does it take to diagnose a mystery bit?

my guess is that it is a piece of the airduct tubing for the alternator inlet this can be viewed from underneath the car.
If you want to inspect the timing belt for wear that would also be a good idea.
If the air tubes are connected to the tops of the cam covers then you can do a quick check to determine if you have T belt problems.
Start by removing the aircleaner element and tapping it onto a clean piece of paper, use a magnifying glass to look for pieces of rubber this will be timing belt particles if there are any.
The particles get sucked out of the tops of the cam covers and into the aircleaner

Yeah, check the belt, definitely, but that doesn't look like shredded belt rubber to me. I'd bet that it's some road debris you sucked up on some drive that got lodged in the cooling fans. At some point it came loose and got blown up into the engine bay, where you found it.

Also, oil and water probably means you need to tighten your hose clamp and refresh your oil filler neck seal. Just my $0.02

Peered into the holes and the belt looks good under both intake tubes... Alternator cooling hose? It is a bit shredded but this piece is about 2"x3" and no signs of metal wire. Sorry, should have placed a ruler in the picture.
