On my 83 (k_jet, but the aav looks the same to me), fully open , the hole is pac-man shaped - round, but with a > shape on one side. I did some work on mine because it wasnt lifting idle enough on cold starts.
Drill out the rivets, open up - nothing special falls out, but something is loose (forget what); Watch out for wires to bimetallic strip. Check this for continuity - open circuit is bad.
Put in freezer 10mins; Check if fully opened - if not bend spring hook until its MORE open.
Freeze again to check, modify as needed.
Warm up some - steam from kettle etc, check its close to fully closed.
Reassemble with M6 bolts, nylocs or similar.
Worked for me - cold starts ~15C/65F idles 1100 for a minute or two before coming down slowly.
