Emission-laws have been coming for all of us since the '70's. And if you look back at what state tells the EPA what to set, it's your state. Not-reading-more in to than that, it's the truth. Why do you think Porsche set cars with a destination of Ca, as a separate build code?

Well I vote we fire up our detroit 12V71 turbodiesels and tow those lefties back out into the pacific!! HOT DAMN!! YEE HAWWW!

Honestly, the real problem here is that we just have too many people. For all the money we've spent (speaking globally as in ALL auto manufacturers and suppliers aka Bosch Delco etc) to pick up our little efficiencies here and there....just doesn't seem worth it to me. We just need less people driving - which I think would be easy to enact with tougher licensing to be able to drive. Thats a whole nuther can of worms though partners...Driving cars should be a bit more like getting a pilot's license if you ask me!!

...the reality -is- that emissions laws are becoming more of a reality, every single year that goes by and it has nothing to do with California.
I'm not sure that is completely true... here in the backwater of Missouri (STL), we have successfully killed off the roadside sniffers and just recently altered the law so only 96 and newer cars are subject to smog inspection. Pretty good news for my old cars. Bruce

Now we have these nice elctronic signs that say things like "Green day - breath easier."

That's funny. Significantly reduce the population of the segment I can sell it to?

I have a 1978 Porsche 928. I mean what do you figure the population of potential buyers is now? 5 or 6? Please.

Anyways....I bought this car in 1990. I haven't sold it in 20 years. I have no intention of ever selling it. I fully expect I will own it when it becomes obsolete and unable to drive on the road, when I am very old.

Boy, I'm running some risk there!

Hey Speedtoys, can you give me some stats on how many tickets have been written on out of state cars in Cali for non compliance with Cali emission laws? Wonder if it is over 1? Or 0?

I think I'll find something else to lose sleep over.

As we all know, outside the insane asylum of California, there's a honor-system don't-ask-don't-tell policy with respect to the aftermarket parts manufacturers. You're not supposed to take off direct emissions equipment or change its location. But beyond that, the manufacturer will have to give his scout's honor word that the performance part doesn't increase emissions. And, in fact, most aftermarket performance stuff doesn't increase emissions, or performance!

In California, it's all illegal and cam regrinds, strokers, headers, etc. are all not allowed without passing a bag test that must cost $50k all in. But they also have a 10% or so state tax rate, selling and serving horse meat is a felony there, and they have to turn of the power from hospitals because running the hydropower plant would disturb the migration patterns of salmon.

What does the California CRAP approval have to do with federal laws? It's sufficient but not necessary.

Mine came off BUT

I understand where there is a more dense (no pun intended) population, where there are more vehicles,
the smog from them is something that must be controlled. personally I think its those ten billion Chinese burping green tea that dose it

Back to the op's question: One (small) gain:
On older 928s the same belt runs both the fan and air pump. If the pump seizes up, it will burn the belt off, thus stopping your fan. This will become obvious when you stop moving with the engine running after a few minutes. AMHIK.

Just wait until the feds start using magnets on your trash late at night to find out if you put an empty soup can in there instead of in the proper recycling bin.

You are so gonna pay BIG fines for that.

You boys keep pulling those 32V cats. I need 'em to bolt onto my 16V cars. Bigger diam, exact same placement of flanges and air pump pipe. The perfect pipes.
