Novice, i hope you learn as much as you can about the chevy engine context. it's a viable option that can add about 100-150 horsepower and save you thousands in maintenance over the next 150-200 k miles with normal driving. by that time of course, civilization will have likely, passed through a reckoning.

No offense, but I'd be more interested in replacing one of these oily old Chevy V8s in my trucks with a Porsche V8. I've worked on both. The Porsche machine is far superior.
Looks like the NH experts are gonna dial-in on this and maybe focus some real diagnostics on this unfortunate situation.

your tax dollars paid for their 3 billion dollar development program and these low maintenance, fire breathing, dragons out of the apocalypse. just sayin. and you're absolutely right... the 968s are begging for one of these. the 928s much less so, since there's already a proper motor that goes in there without any mods.

When the car is running on 4 cylinders that is NOT limp home mode .....that was How do I keep stupid people from driving when the car has a 50% power loss but they still drive it and the cats glow red hot and the car catches on fire mode ...! Porsche has stated that running on 4 cylinders is very hard on the driveshaft and may cause it to break. Driving it on four cylinders is a very bad idea. Not fixing it even worse. If the engine seized (would not crank over on the starter motor) then it probably is thrust bearing failure then a used engine S-4 engine is the least expensive fix if you pay others to work on your car.

it's not the first time someone here has mentioned about newer owners being especially careful to have their supercars checked out at the first sign of problems before something like this happens. i imagine this winter's cold weather starts just made things worse rather quickly... be interesting to see what the motor swap will finally cost on $$$.

If you buy a short block then you need to have the engine assembled.....that leads to many while you are in there decisions...like main and rod bearings , new piston rings ?, new pistons ? requires a full gasket set etc. etc. And putting one together is something like 40 hours by the book as I recall....swapping engines is more like a 15 hour project which at $100 per hour is a lot less.

[QUOTE=odurandina;7270503]it's not the first time someone here has mentioned about newer owners being especially careful to have their supercars checked ..... " New owners are vulnerable to TBF BECAUSE it starts out slowly and the car just SOMETIMES stalls out at a light the car becomes unreliable but when cold starts and runs so GUESS WHAT ! They trade in the car to a dealer who sells it to a wholesaler who sells it to a small dealer who sells it to the NEW OWNER !!!!! Who then inherits the problem but often does not even realize it besides the damage is already done. Part of the prepurchase inspection on later Automatic trans cars needs to be a check of the crankshaft endplay....how far back and forth the crank will move. Excessive end play means the thrust bearing AND the thrust surface on the crankshaft are worn....

The cheapest way as some have already mentioned is to buy a whole engine and install it. However, the advantage of getting a short block is to at least change the head gasket, their old and many have holes in them, allowing the old coolant to corrode and make a hole through the head, the hole will just grow bigger and deeper with age.
