Default More data

More data from seller....he had big trouble smogging it when he bought it and considered taking it out of state for registration. He won't provide a CA smog cert (which he is technically required to do). So this car would probably be best suited for a state with less restrictive requirements.

The price is low, but not crazy low considering the chances are very good it needs a complete intake off service with a new MAF, ISV, and injectors and its an AT.

OTOH noway the seller can really slip out of providing a smog certificate, so maybe a crazy low offer would be accepted.

No personal interest from me, other than curiosity. Shouldn't an 85 have speaker grilles on the door panels? If anybody goes and looks, take pictures, post the vin etc.

Thanks, James. All the kudos really go to Brian though.

If this car is smog-exempt in Texas and it checks out properly, then it really does seem like a no-brainer for someone down there.

The car would have had no O2 sensor from factory.

It likely has cats fitted as part of its federalization, in which case it should be relatively straightforward to troubleshoot it into an easy emissions pass.

I'd guess it hasnt been adjusted for correct idle mixture to calibrate the MAF signal; the signal ages towards lean (high nox). First steps would be:

1. replace MAF with new one
2. attach IR gas anlyzer or even WBO2 to exhaust pre-cats
3. set idle mixture correctly using potentiometer on MAF - should be 1% CO, or around stoich if using WBO2.

It would be smog exempt in TX next year... I would need the TX DOT form for buying a car signed by the guy saying what he sold it to me for so I could register it, but no biggie on that. If we get to that point I can email/fax/snail mail it to him or any of you there to get a "John Henry" on it... Lets see how it checks out and go from there.

Just checked again...John Curry (Drift King) is right...that car won't have to pass smog in TX EVER!

Dan,

Yea, it should have the dual speaker grills. I noticed that too right off, but forgot to mention it here.

So, guys when you look at this be sure to confirm that it is IN FACT an '85! Should have the dual dist engine, 4 spd auto and it SHOULD have dual speaker grills in the upper part of the door! It does have the correct seats for '85 though.

If I end up with this car at least I have a friend with garage space for it and he has already offered to hang on to a 928 for me if I need him too...he is a past S4 owner and he is starting to get the itch again...this would push him right over the edge, but of course I would let him drive it, so he would not even need to get his own! These cars are always happier when they are driven!

Getting it here might be another story. Sean R, can your beautiful wife help me out with this if it comes down to it?

Darklands,

Thanks so much for the update! I think in the USA EVERY '85 car got that upgrade. I know MANY, MANY items were optional in ROW trim, but didn't realize that was one of them! I stand (or sit in my case) humbly corrected and happily so I might add.

Same for sun roofs in the US, at least by the time the S4's came out...you just can't hardly find an S4 w/o a sunroof and they are so small and pointless, and they leak and take up head room! Really to bad more DIDN'T have the sunroof here!

Thanks again for the update and clearing that up! AWESOME!

James I could probably drive it to Lubbock for you just need to cover a ticket from Lubbock Tx. back to Orange county. Two weeks ago that was $161. Plus you pay the fuel for the 928 ! not the airplane

Jim,

I'll keep you posted. That sounds like a great idea though and I doubt I could do it any cheaper at all! While Lubbock is not in my back yard, it is a hell of a lot closer than LA!

Thanks guys! Looking forward to the report on this car. Hope the report is a good one!
