Default FYI: OB (Sloppy) Shift Linkage Trouble Spots Quick Reference

I had my TT out to rebuild along with my tranny so i thought I would take some quick pics and highlight where we often have shift linkage problems with pics. This is often a topic under the 'shifting sloppy' category...enjoy...

Overview:

Rear:

Middle:

Front:

Couple comments,

On the rear universal, the forward "threads" as you called them do not and will not wear. These are just an anti slip area for the side to side motion of the slip collar.

The stop pin I have yet to have seen one loose. Infact in order to remove that (4mm allen key) most almost strip it! If that is missing the universal will just flop back and forth doing nothing.

To replace the rear bushings just drive out the rear pin as it is a slight interference fit. Do not worry about adding to the interference once removed, I have yet to see one even move even after 5 removals and reinstalls.

As to the front parts of the shifter linkage, the ball cup is a known problem. The secondary bushing normally gets overlooked. Both of these are removed with the new short shifter that Roger stocks.

That is the throw on the new shifter.

Brad, can you say some more about your transmission rebuild?

Lizard, good point on the 'threads' on the rear coupler. I did add the 4mm allen bolt because I forgot to tighten that one down one time after working on the rear coupler. So, it's just a spot to check IMHO.

Landseer,

About the tranny rebuild, what woud like to know...

- Finding NLA parts?
- Longs shipping delays from Germany?
- Expensive ?
- Extremely difficult replacing the dog teeth on the gears?

LOL!!

Lizard is right about the stop pin. It is conical shaped and mine fell out...... go figure.... and the shifter just flopped around. Completely usless. Thank God as I thought my tranny was shot and was looking at big bucks.

Thanks for the write up as I need to do something with mine eventually. It works fine a 6k rpm WOT shifts but don't try to downshift it to 3rd, 2nd, or 1st unless in low rpm's.

She should shift beautiful when you are done!

I had heard that the stop pin was very easy to strip, so when I replaced the bushings in the rear coupler I decided to apply heat to the coupler before I attempted to loosen the pin. The coupler sits pretty close to the floor pan and there was enough grime in the area that I didn't want to take a chance on using an open flame so I used a heat gun instead. That worked perfectly as the pin backed out easily and I didn't catch my car on fire. I'd recommend giving that a try when it's time to replace those bushings.
