It may have taken as much as 2 minutes.....
I have an ulterior motive for understanding the factory wiring- the GTS has a giant monstrosity of a stereo installation and at some point I'll probably rip most of it out:

I think your GTS is a cousin to my GT. My car came to me with a 3/4" piece of particle board under the luggage carpet and a bunch of small screw holes in the carpet. Now I am even more certain that hardware like yours was once located on the right side of the rear compartment. At some point a PO dismantled the system, re-installed the CD2 with the incorrect amp and wired it up as a 4 channel system. I probably could have lived with it and never known the difference if I had the code to the radio.

Jim--
I replaced the original Reno head unit in my car soon after I bought it, used a more modern at the time Blau Alaska and bypassed the factory amp. The head unit came from Crutchfield, mostly because they were able to supply the females of those little speaker cable plugs to the factory amp. So I added new wiring from the new head unit down to the original amp location, and used the new connectors to attach to the original speaker cabling there. The new wiring I added also included new power and ground, low-level pre-amp connections for a future 'real' amp install, and a cable to connect a rear CD changer. All the original wiring was left in place unmolested and easy to restore to original should that need arise. Point again after all this is that the mating plugs for the factory speaker wires are available out in the 'real' world. A local installer might have them too.

Here's the Crutchfield link to the female speaker connectors: (Product # 120701693 if the link changes...)

Probably not - but several options:
A 4 channel with 3 way crossovers for the rear 3 speakers & 2 way crossovers for the front channel speakers
OR
A 4 channel with 2 way crossovers for the rear 2 speakers (drop the rear quarter speakers) & 2 way crossovers for the front channel speakers
OR
A 4 channel driving both rear channels (as stock) with the front channels driven from the (new) head unit via stock 2 way crossovers
OR a 2 channel with 2 way crossovers for the rear 2 speakers (drop the rear quarter speakers) & the front channels driven from the (new) head unit via stock 2 way crossovers
Many other combos are possible too...
Most amps available today have much more power output than these old blaupunkts - so a 6 chanel amp is likely to be much too big... but most newer head units also have more powerful output stages than the stock amp either 2 channel or 4 channel on some so you only need more channels with really old head units....
Mine isn't configured like any of these and certainly doesn't fit in the stock location. I have 2 x 4 channel amps mounted on the rear seat backs, configured to drive the stock 6 channels + a bridged pair for subwoofer. However all my speakers & crossovers are replaced as is the head unit - makes a custom configuration a little easier. I know this sounds like mega audio - but its actually quite a stealthy look and looks pretty stock (at first look). So its possible to add amps & change speakers without it looking like an entrant in an audio competition.
