Default 944 not 928

944 NA, 5 speed. Slow, good brakes..looks and sounds fast. After getting beaten once by a ford escort or hyundai sonata...will resort to slow cruising with the roof off.

928 when he graduates from college.

Gotta watch for rust on them. Ours was the best year IMHO, 67, electric OD, chrome grill, B18-B.
Yea, had the overdrive on a stalk switch.

I understand about jumping hills, most of the guys in my high school class had lost front teeth like that.

I prefer the 70's and up myself, but they all look alike pretty much.

I have restored a couple of them, never could find a good one at the right price as a start point.

Frankly, I'd be more concerned about owning a 928 from a cost standpoint. Fixing a 944 was rough enough, and I could do it for the cost of parts.

The worst part was having to rush work because you depended on the car. Working on old Porsches is fun when you can take your time.

I got my son a Corvette, an 89, when he was 17, but I thought a lot about it and we talked a lot. It was a serious decision. He's very responsible, maybe more than I am, and it turned out to be a great thing, you're only young once - from about 16 to 66+ ;-). He's incredibly careful and it has been a great thing for him.. and me.. that bonding stuff you know.

(I was going to give him the 82, but I think he was afraid he might hurt it and he really loves Corvettes)

It really depends on the person. Some of his friends probably shouldn't be walking on the road. ;-)

Good luck with your decision.

Rod

OK, Sorry but I still remember....... and given the exponential increase in useless drivers out there, in conjunction with the modern distractions....(texting etc.). My older guy just turned 16, for the time being he's driving the suburban. (My winter wheels). He's pretty cool headed, but it's really interesting the difference in his attitude between when he's driving the tow unit as opposed to the Porsche.
Just not ready to roll the bones on this one just yet.
On top of that and just as a note, there was some guy on the highway beside me for a while tonight on the way home from the office in a C series AMG merc, who was totally absorbed in his crackberry and his dash display...and he was a ways from 16.

If he know how to drive it responsibly, I don't see the problem. However, for a 16 year old, responsibility with something like this happens only once in a rare while.

My first car, when I was 17, was a Porsche 924. That was 2 years ago and I never got careless with it, and I've never been in a wreck, and never been pulled over or had any tickets. She's still going good, but needs a little maintenance work right now. I got my 928 a few months ago. I am 19 right now.

The 928 is a Super Car, and it's going to be dangerous if your not responsible.
If this 16 year old is not very responsible, this car should certainly be a NO!

http://www.marinij.com/novato/ci_8417089 The car actualy belonged to his Father not a friend.
My daughter is friends with his sister so I am a bit biased. Still something to think about.

hmmm... I used to drive out on that road a lot when I was a teenager. He's lucky they didn't end up in the lagoon. I am sure that at that age I would have killed myself in a 928. A friend of mine actually had one when we were in high school and he was smart enough to only let me drive it once. As it was I had a 1972 MGB set up for autocrossing - it had WAY more grip than power, which was probably a good combination for me in retrospect.

I think my kids are getting a modern NA Subaru for their first car. I have one now and it's very hard to get into trouble in it - I think AWD can only help an inexperienced driver stay out of trouble.
